Psalm 119  Taw vs. 169-173

 Let my cry come before you, O LORD;

 give me understanding according to your word!

  Let my plea come before you;

deliver me according to your word.

 My lips will pour forth praise,

 for you teach me your statutes.

 My tongue will sing of your word,

 for all your commandments are right.

Let your hand be ready to help me,

 for I have chosen your precepts.

  I long for your salvation, O LORD,

 and your law is my delight.

  Let my soul live and praise you,

and let your rules help me.

 I have gone astray like a lost sheep;

seek your servant,

for I do not forget your commandments.

The plea for understanding is a continual thread throughout Psalm 119.  With the request is acknowledgment that true understanding is given by God.  His word is given to give us life, salvation, peace, comfort and righteousness.  Jesus, the spoken Word fulfilled, answers the psalmist’s frequent cry for salvation.  We are so blessed!  We have the spoken Word, now written; we have the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ; we have the constant presence of the Holy Spirit, our comforter.  And yet we forget and wallow in our self-pity parties, decrying our situations in life, losing the joy of the Lord.  The psalmist so sought after what we have at our disposal, to take or to leave it.  The psalmist knew the power in the combination of the Trinity.  We do well to appreciate what we have and give God praise for it.  We do well to take our collective eyes off our situation and do as the psalmist led; look to the Word and presence of God Almighty.  Let us be diligent students of the  gift of God’s word; let us pray with the psalmist for understanding as we meditate upon God’s principles.  Let us give thanks for this gift of life and love so freely given by our Creator.

A call for truth…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Psalm 119 Qoph vs 145-152

 With my whole heart I cry;

 answer me, O LORD!

I will keep your statutes.

 I call to you; save me,

 that I may observe your testimonies.

 I rise before dawn and cry for help;

 I hope in your words.

 My eyes are awake before the watches of the night,

 that I may meditate on your promise.

 Hear my voice according to your steadfast love;

 O LORD, according to your justice give me life.

  They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose;

 they are far from your law.

  But you are near, O LORD,

 and all your commandments are true.

  Long have I known from your testimonies

that you have founded them forever.

Rise before dawn to hear…

Rise before dawn to cry…

We have hope in His words…

We meditate on His promises…

We are awake in the night…

We seek His words, hope, promises and commandments…

We lift our voices to Him…

We establish our foundations upon His statutes, precepts, commands…

And foremost is the command to love…

God Almighty first, our fellow-men and women second.  He is truth and in that we can trust.  He saves us from those who do not believe, from our own lack, from the penalties of sin.  He promises us that salvation and with it comes life, now and  forever.  A full life blessed by His presence once again as at the beginning.  His word is founded forever; we need not fear its passing.  He is  near.  Rise to meet Him!!!

Words of gold…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Psalm 119 Ayin vs 121-128

I have done what is just and right;

do not leave me to my oppressors.

Give your servant a pledge of good;

let not the insolent oppress me.

My eyes long for your salvation

and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise.

Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love,

and teach me your statutes.

I am your servant; give me understanding,

that I may know your testimonies!

It is time for the LORD to act,

for your law has been broken.

Therefore I love your commandments above gold,

above fine gold.

Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right;

I hate every false way.

Do thoughts come, unbidden, to oppress us?  The question is what to do when that happens?  Is it enough to deny the thoughts?  Wouldn’t it be good to not only turn it away but also to replace it with the words of God?

“…My eyes long for your salvation

and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise.

Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love,

and teach me your statutes. …”

gold

“…Therefore I love your commandments above gold,

above fine gold….”

Do we long to hear the voice of God?  Let us be still; let His Word sink into our consciousness.

“…I am your servant; give me understanding,

that I may know your testimonies! …”

Let it become such a part of us that it seems to have  always been there.  In that place we can begin to know who speaks in our minds and in our hearing.  We begin to know what is the perfect will of God.  We can identify the false ways because we know with His understanding the truth.

“…Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right;

I hate every false way. …

A lamp and a light…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Psalm 119 Nun vs 105-112

Your word is a lamp to my feet and

 a light to my path.

  I have sworn an oath and confirmed it,

 to keep your righteous rules.

 I am severely afflicted;

 give me life, O LORD, according to your word!

  Accept my freewill offerings of praise,

O LORD, and teach me your rules.

 I hold my life in my hand continually,

but I do not forget your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me,

but I do not stray from your precepts.

  Your testimonies are my heritage forever,

for they are the joy of my heart.

 I incline my heart to perform your statutes

 forever, to the end.

In a world of darkness the light is sought.  In a world of uncertainty that which is sure is sought.  In a world of confusion, order is sought. In a world of deceit, that which is true is sought.  In a world of death, life is sought.  “Your word is a lamp…and a light…”  “give me life…according to your word…” “…the wicked have laid a snare…I do not stray from your percepts…”

We are surrounded, bombarded with multiple attempts to leave the way set before us by God every day.  These are the snares, attempts to take our minds, our thoughts captive.  Ads abound that tell us we want to remain forever young, we want to have stuff, what is important is what is new, or innovative or sexy.  These are snares that begin a mind-set that takes us away from a holy life lived for God.  They seem innocent and that is the bait.  Where they lead is toward self and selfish desires; they lead away from a desire to please the God of the universe who created us and loves us.

Being immersed in his word brings a vision that is clear, not clouded.  When one is fed daily the words of God; the snares become obvious and distasteful.  We are not the sum total of the money in our pockets.  We are created, loved beings.  “…Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord, and teach me your rules.”  Rules, precepts, statutes, law are used interchangeably — all lead to sound principles to live by.

The choice is clear…

Psalm 119 Lamedh vs 89-96

Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed

 in the heavens.

  Your faithfulness endures to all generations;

 you have established the earth, and it stands fast.

 By your appointment they stand this day,

 for all things are your servants.

  If your law had not been my delight,

 I would have perished in my affliction.

  I will never forget your precepts,

for by them you have given me life.

 I am yours; save me,

 for I have sought your precepts.

The wicked lie in wait to destroy me,

 but I consider your testimonies.

 I have seen a limit to all perfection,

 but your commandment is exceedingly broad.

He has spoken…it is forever without end.  Salvation is sure.  Our prayer joins with the psalmist, we will not forget the Lord’s word, we will live by its principles for that is life!  Who do we listen to, who do we look to?  The Lord is who we seek for his word stands.  The words of men fail, destroy, decay.  They bring death and decrease.  The words of God are faithful, endure, create and build; they last forever.  The choice is clear for life; choose God, choose Christ, choose the Holy Spirit.  One who creates, one who saves and one who guides.  We are blessed!

Psalm 119  Beth vs 9-16

 How can a young man keep his way pure?

       By guarding it according to your word.

With my whole heart I seek you;

       let me not wander from your commandments!

 I have stored up your word in my heart,

        that I might not sin against you.

  Blessed are you, O LORD;

        teach me your statutes!

 With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth.

     In the way of your testimonies

 I delight as much as in all riches.

        I will meditate on your precepts

       and fix my eyes on your ways.

  I will delight in your statutes;

       I will not forget your word.

Words to understand:  precepts, rules, decrees, commandments, statutes.  They are synonymous with principles.  We seek them out and when they are found, we keep the principles given to us guaranteeing an abundant life with God.  We fix our eyes upon His ways; the eyes of our heart, mind, soul, understanding fixed upon His ways.  His ways give us life.  We store them up in our hearts; for out of the heart the mouth speaks.  Then what flows from us to those around us is life-giving.  We become His servants of choice; delighting in His Word.

We guard our hearts with His word; the word that is hidden in our hearts.  Out of the heart are the issues of life; His word gives life, abundant and free of the penalties of death, free of the bondage of sin, free to be as He intended us to be…His children.  What a thought!  What a concept!  What joy!

“…I will delight in your statutes;

          I will not forget your word. …”

Psalm 119  Aleph  vs. 1-9

 Blessed are those whose way is blameless,

         who walk in the law of the LORD!

  Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,

       who seek him with their whole heart,

       who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!

You have commanded your precepts

       to be kept diligently.

 Oh that my ways may be steadfast

      in keeping your statutes!

Then I shall not be put to shame,

      having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.

I will praise you with an upright heart,

     when I learn your righteous rules.

I will keep your statutes;

     do not utterly forsake me!

Let us begin to pray Psalm 119 each day;  specifically for our nation.  Sing it to the Lord God Almighty.  The genuine believer loves the Word of God.  The genuine believer studies the Word of God.  The genuine believer knows the Word of God.  The genuine believer lives the Word of God.  It is hidden in our hearts; it is written on our  foreheads, in our minds; it is written on our hands, used and acted upon daily.  Those who cross our paths daily, see it  on our faces, hear it in our words, see it in our actions, sense the Lord God’s presence when in our presence.  We are immersed in scripture, living it out.  That is how our fellowships grow, as  a spiritually hungry nation begins to see the real in God’s people.
