Reflections from 2 Kings 1:

  1. The description of Elijah matches the description of John the Baptist given in the New Testament.

(the king) He asked them, “The man who came to meet you and told you these things, what kind of man was he?” “He was a hairy man,” they answered him, “with a leather belt around his waist.”  He said, ” It was Elijah from Tishbe.” 2 Kings 1

John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. – Matthew 3:4

2.  “Man of God”  used the first two times by the commanders of fifty was done sarcastically.  Man of God is a representative of God to us…calls for the same respect one would give an all-powerful God.  The lack of respect was what was punished…with death!  Study of the Old Testament highlights God’s disgust with arrogance and smugness.  Disrespect brought judgement many times.  Something to be very wary of.

Then the king sent a commander of fifty to Elijah, together with his fifty men….The commander climbed up to him(Elijah) and said, ” Man of God, the king says to come down.”  Elijah answered the commander of fifty, “If I am in fact a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and burn you up, along with your fifty men.” Fire came down from heaven, and it burned him up and his fifty men.

The king sent another commander of fifty, together with his fifty men.  He said to him (Elijah), “Man of God, the king says , ‘Come down immediately!’ ” Elijah answered them, “If I am in fact a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and burn you up, along with your fifty men.”  Fire came down from heaven, and it burned up him and his fifty men.

3.  God’s word is powerful…it accomplishes what it sets out to do.  This is done with or without humanity’s belief.  We can participate in it or be at its effect.  Sobering.

Take away:

Israel belongs to God.  When they stray he will not ignore it but take steps to bring them back into alignment with Him and His ways.

Our country has strong foundations in the Judeo-Christian beliefs.  It was founded by deeply religious people whose faith in God led them here to give him honor and practice His ways.  Their primary concern was to have a place where they could do so without hindrance or persecution for their faith. As we continue, as a nation, to honor Him we are blessed.  As we leave His ways and disrespect Him we are faced with the consequences not much different than that faced by the Hebrew nation.

Our history bears the truth that those who serve the Lord bring blessing.  Those who disrespect Him and His commands, bring cursing. We are warned.  What course of action will we take?  Our prayers can make the difference.

From Ephesians:

10Finally, grow powerful in union with the Lord, in union with his mighty strength! 11Use all the armor and weaponry that God provides, so that you will be able to stand against the deceptive tactics of the Adversary. 12For we are not struggling against human beings, but against the rulers, authorities and cosmic powers governing this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm. 13So take up every piece of war equipment God provides; so that when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist; and when the battle is won, you will still be standing. 14Therefore, stand! Have the belt of truth buckled around your waist, put on righteousness for a breastplate, 15and wear on your feet the readiness that comes from the Good News of shalom. 16Always carry the shield of trust, with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the Evil One. 17And take the helmet of deliverance; along with the sword given by the Spirit, that is, the Word of God; 18as you pray at all times, with all kinds of prayers and requests, in the Spirit, vigilantly and persistently, for all God’s people.

From <>

What to do?  How does one do the Word?  Grow powerful in union with the Lord.  Direct thoughts and questions toward Christ first.  Then put on and take up God’s armor.  It’s another set of gifts!  This armor is specifically designed to combat those in the spiritual realm that are always ready to attack the believer.

First, fasten the belt of truth around your core.  Here is the support needed to stand upright.  Truth is that spoken in the Word and truth is Christ, ” I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me..”  Next, put on righteousness as a breastplate, protecting the inner core of the believer.  This is God’s righteousness, able to do more than protect and supported by the belt.  On the feet fasten the shoes of peace, a unique peace hard to explain but there none-the-less.  Shoes designed to grip and dig in on slippery slopes of spiritually designed accusations and lies meant to make the believer trip and fall.   Now take up the helmet, shield and sword.

The helmet protects the mind and gives access to all God has spoken and done. With the uniform  on, the rest of the weapons available can be picked up for use in battle.  The shield of faith or trust will deflect the arrows of accusation coming often in the form of thoughts or words spoken by another.  God’s Word trumps all others and faith in that Word can be used a shield.  Which will the believer listen to and trust; God or other?  The sword is the Word given as truth and able to put to flight or final rest the attacks that come.

Finally, activate it all in prayer, with prayer.  There’s a scripture for every thought or word coming from the liar; it can be found and prayed against the lie.  And the lie will die its death, defeated by truth.  Search the scriptures daily for those healing words, those defensive words, words of recovery and words to take on the offensive which will attack and defeat the lie.  They are all there to be used.

When prayer rises, God activates his power on our behalf wherever we ask it to be directed.  His power activated is able ” to accomplish more than we can ask or imagine. ” His words spoken in prayer will “accomplish what they are set to do; they will not return empty, void.”

Pray – Help me, Father, to begin each day putting on the uniform You’ve given; that which identifies me as Yours.  Upon rising, may I speak Your truth putting on the belt, may I recognize the breastplate you’ve given of righteousness and be encouraged to get up and move forward, protected.  May I remember the shoes of Your peace that will help me stand firm.  I want that helmet to protect my mind; help me fill my mind with Your Word to be used as needed. I will take up the shield of faith for my trust is in You alone and I will follow Christ’s example and use Your Word, the sword of truth to fight the enemy.

Repent – I repent for waiting so long to fill up on Your Word when it is so vital to my success as Your child and servant.

Ask – May my ways be steady in observing Your laws.  Then I will not be put to shame, since I fixed my sight on all Your ways.

Yes – Praise Adonai, all you nations!  Worship him, all you peoples!  For his grace has overcome us, and Adonai’s truth continues forever.

Faith’s Benefits…

But God is so rich in mercy and loves us with such intense love that even when we were dead because of our acts of disobedience, he brought us to life along with the Messiah— it is by grace that you have been delivered.  That is, God raised us up with the Messiah Yeshua and seated us with him in heaven, in order to exhibit in ages to come how infinitely rich is his grace, how great is his kindness toward us who are united with the Messiah Yeshua.  For you have been delivered by grace through trusting, and even this is not your accomplishment but God’s gift. You were not delivered by your own actions; therefore no one should boast.  For we are of God’s making, created in union with the Messiah Yeshua for a life of good actions already prepared by God for us to do.

What have we received? Mercy granted us; the result of an intense love we truly do not fully understand.  We have life and what a difference from the non-believer’s; not because we are ‘special’ but because we have been granted the faith, mercy and love we didn’t deserve; something available to all God’s creation.  What then makes us different? We accepted the gifts; we said yes.  In that moment, the one saying yes changes from a dead person to one full of the life intended from the very beginning.  Thanks to the Messiah, Jesus Christ, we are one with Him as He designed us to be.  Any one receiving those gifts can only respond in like kind. Actions become compassionate, loving, caring and thoughts are focused on Him not ourselves.  He is so rich in love and mercy, forgiveness is given where it is not merited.

Pray – When I meditate on Your goodness and grace I am so humbled and grateful.  You have treated your servant well, Adonai, in keeping with Your Word.  Teach me good judgment and knowledge, because I trust in Your command.

Repent- Before I has humbled, I used to go astray; but now I observe Your Word.

Ask- -You are good, and You do good; teach me Your laws.  The arrogant are slandering me, but I will wholeheartedly keep Your precepts.

Yes – It is for my good that I have been humbled; it was so that I learned Your laws.  The Torah You have spoken means more to me than a fortune in gold and silver.

Praise commensurate with His glory…

Ephesians 1

Furthermore, you who heard the message of the truth, the Good News offering you deliverance, and put your trust in the Messiah were sealed by him with the promised Ruach HaKodesh, who guarantees our inheritance until we come into possession of it and thus bring him praise commensurate with his glory.

Three times God tells us through Paul, we will “bring him praise commensurate with his glory.”  How do I love you, O God?  Let me count the ways and why.  You loved me first.  You planned me long before a world existed.  My heart, my core being fills up with unspoken emotion when I meditate on this.  My spirit continually seeks for more of You; more revealed in Your Word, more revealed in Your creation.  My body gets weak when I contemplate Your greatness and I am left amazed and puzzled that One so much greater than I would consider me let alone know me and love me as You do.  Who is man that You are mindful of him or the son of man that You visit him? I am forever grateful…

For this reason, ever since I heard about your trust in the Lord Yeshua, and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you.  In my prayers I keep asking the God of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, the glorious Father, to give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you will have full knowledge of him.  I pray that he will give light to the eyes of your hearts, so that you will understand the hope to which he has called you, what rich glories there are in the inheritance he has promised his people, and how surpassingly great is his power working in us who trust him.  It works with the same mighty strength he used when he worked in the Messiah to raise him from the dead and seat him at his right hand in heaven, far above every ruler, authority, power, dominion, or any other name that can be named either in the ‘olam hazah or in the ‘olam haba.  Also, he has put all things under his feet and made him head over everything for the Messianic Community, which is his body, the full expression of him who fills all creation.

It is time, past time, to join in prayer.  It is time to pray for all God’s people to receive a spirit of wisdom and revelation; to receive the full knowledge of him; to have their eyes opened, the eyes of the heart, to understand the hope they are called to.  It is time to pray they understand the inheritance, that  his great power works in them to accomplish more than they can imagine or ask; this same power able to raise Jesus from death to life.

Pray – Father, who has given every family in heaven and on earth their name and their character, I pray to you asking that you will empower them by your Holy Spirit so that the Messiah may come to live in them through their trust and faith.

Repent – I repent for the times I feel too weary to pray for them.  I repent for the time I want to move quickly through my prayers so I can do what I want to do.

Ask – I pray that I, with all of God’s people, will be rooted and founded in love; that I and they will be given the strength to grasp the length, depth, height and width of the Messiah’s love to know it even though it is beyond all knowing that we may be filled with the fullness of You, God.

Yes – I will ever thank You for Your goodness to all mankind.  And I thank You for the answers to prayer You bring.  O God, You are my God and I will ever praise You…

Praying Scripture…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Praying scripture puts the enemy to flight and rights the thinking process which, ripple effect, will go far to right actions, feelings and desires.

The breastplate of righteousness, God’s righteousness imputed to the believer, guards the heart.  Proverbs tells the believer to guard the heart for out of it flow the issues of life. Righteousness, defined right living, guards the heart.  This righteousness is God’s given to the believer through the salvation process.  Dressing in the armor daily involves putting on the belt of truth which helps to support the breastplate of righteousness.  God’s Word provides the information, the truth, that instructs in right living.  Right living decreases the points in the believer’s life that the enemy can target.

Truth and righteousness support and protect the core of the believer’s spiritual being.  Here is the strength to stand upright and move forward, not bowed over and brought down to a standstill.  The enemy’s arrows of accusation, thrusts of deception, blows of failure cannot penetrate the breastplate supported by truth.

God’s Word is truth; God’s Word states His Righteousness is given to those who receive it.  “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God.”  2 Corinthians 5:21.  It is a gift to the believer.  The believer becomes righteous, not on their own doing, it is the gift of God!  The believer can stand tall, supporting the breastplate with truth.  Put it on!

The lie of the enemy is that the believer cannot attain righteousness, they cannot be perfect as God is.  Therefore, why try?  Give up.  When the believer responds with the truth, they cannot but God has,  the lie often becomes a comparison with other believers; better than some, less than some.  Again the believer responds with truth that they are righteous because God is and He gave them His breastplate.  This is when the believer puts off their own concept of righteousness, their own sense of pride or defeat and takes on God’s righteousness, believing what God has said.  “Put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and … be renewed in the spirit of your minds, … and put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”  Ephesians 4:22 – 24.  An action taken on by the believer.  Take off and put on are actions.

In prayer, ask for mercy, ask for change and stay connected.  Be aware and note when self rises up to try to resist attacks in the believer’s own strength. Pray to activate God’s power in combat.

Pray – True, I was born guilty; was a sinner from the moment my mother conceived me.  Still, You want truth in the inner person; so make me know wisdom in my inmost heart.

Repent – Lord, I repent for giving into my own feelings and acting on them.  I repent for laying aside Your righteousness continually attempting to be righteous in my own strength.

Ask – Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.  Let me hear the sound of joy and gladness, so that the bones You crushed can rejoice.  Turn away Your face from my sins, and blot out my crimes.  Create in me a clean heart, God; renew in me a resolute spirit.

Yes – I will praise You forever for what You have done, and I will put my hope in Your name; for this is what is good in the presence of Your faithful.

Psalm 51 and 52

Putting on Armor Daily…

Pray – Your word is truth and truth sets me free to function without restriction in the boundaries of your love and truth.  I am set free from doubt and insecurity; you said it, it is so.

Repent-   I repent for the times I allow the thought that I am inadequate to color the requests you make of me.  I am a daughter of the King; made in His image; given His righteousness and able to accomplish what He gives me to do.  I repent also for allowing feelings and emotions to determine my actions rather than following what I know from your Word.

Ask –   May my action be determined by your Word; your promises are true.

Yes – Thank you for forgiveness and for the truth that enables me to move forward encouraging others by your Word.

Now help us take on the day beginning and ending with prayer:

Putting on Armor daily follows a series of steps:

  1. Rise with prayer and song.
  2.  Put on the uniform; belt or girdle of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of peace and helmet of salvation.
  3.  Pick up the shield of faith and the sword of God’s Word.
  4.  Pray, repent, ask, and say Yes! Thank you.

The belt of truth – we are strengthened by truth and use the truth found in God’s Word to stand strong. The belt surrounds the inner core of our being; that area that enables us to stand upright.  It gives us the strength to endure any force that may come against us.

The breastplate of righteousness – a gift from God through Christ.  He gives us His righteousness and we rest secure that our most vulnerable places are protected.  The belt supports the breastplate and we do not have to carry the weight of it in our own strength for that would be our righteousness, weak and incapable.  Our heart is protected by God and His righteousness; right living leaves no room for accusations of wrong living, something  that can become a source of guilt leading to depression and from there to death.

The shoes of peace –  are a gift from God; His peace allows us to stand firm when needed and dig in when necessary to advance.  The turmoil and doubt that abound in the circumstances do not cause anxiety in the inner parts of our being and have little to no effect on our actions in the situation.  This sets the believer apart from the norm.  The shoes of peace keep the believer stable; not blown about by external conditions.

The helmet of salvation – begins with belief and faith that what God says is so. Salvation includes blessings, status and identity – a transformed being drawing from the spiritual blessings available upon request.  It protects the mind from external attacks for it is founded and rooted in the love of Christ. Salvation continues active in our daily walk.

The shield of faith – indicates action.  Pick it up and advance, protected from the fire-studded arrows of accusation and doubt.

The sword of the Spirit is truth; God’s Word, a dagger sharper than any two-edged sword.  It defends and leads an attack against evil perpetrated by deception.

The final piece is prayer – activation of the rest of the armor.  It is communication with the Commander and more powerful than realized when praying God’s Word.  Note the defense and routing of the enemy used by Jesus.

“If you continue in my Word; then you are truly disciples of Mine.”

Pray – Jesus, you say, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete…”  “You shall know the truth and it shall set you free.”  John later repeats, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in truth.”  Implant in me your truth as I search your Word.

Repent – Test me, O Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; for your love is ever before me, and I desire to walk continually in your truth.

Ask – Do not withhold Your mercy from me, O Lord; may your love and your truth always protect me.

Yes! – Father, this moment I am choosing the way of truth.  I want to set my heart on your laws.  Help me to choose the way of truth the rest of my days.

Prayer for this day…

Taken from Isaiah and Psalms:

Praise: Who is my enemy?  Who is my accuser?  Let him confront me!  It is the Sovereign Lord who helps me.  For Adonai Elohim will help.  This is why no insult can wound me.  This is why I have set my face like flint, knowing I will not be put to shame.  My vindicator is close by; let whoever dares to accuse me appear with me in court!…Look if Adonai helps me, who will dare to condemn me?  Here, they are all falling apart like old moth-eaten cloths.

Repentance:   I repent for unawareness of my pride setting me up for hurt, for not turning first to you.  Father, help me to remember in my impatience that the end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.  Adonai is my light and salvation; whom do I need to fear?  Adonai is the stronghold of my life; of whom should I be afraid?

Ask:   Be my light; be my stronghold, my God.

Yes: I will sing to you, Lord, for you are highly exalted.  The horse and his rider you have hurled into the sea!  You, Lord, are my strength and my song:   Exodus 15:1-3
