It appears that God appreciates art; the details on the menorah highlight this.  I see this in the following verses:

[Exodus 25:31-40 RSV] 31 “And you shall make a lampstand of pure gold. The base and the shaft of the lampstand shall be made of hammered work; its cups, its capitals, and its flowers shall be of one piece with it; 32 and there shall be six branches going out of its sides, three branches of the lampstand out of one side of it and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side of it; 33 three cups made like almonds, each with capital and flower, on one branch, and three cups made like almonds, each with capital and flower, on the other branch–so for the six branches going out of the lampstand; 34 and on the lampstand itself four cups made like almonds, with their capitals and flowers, 35 and a capital of one piece with it under each pair of the six branches going out from the lampstand. 36 Their capitals and their branches shall be of one piece with it, the whole of it one piece of hammered work of pure gold. 37 And you shall make the seven lamps for it; and the lamps shall be set up so as to give light upon the space in front of it. 38 Its snuffers and their trays shall be of pure gold. 39 Of a talent of pure gold shall it be made, with all these utensils. 40 And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain.

It appears that God appreciates gold. Note the use of gold in the lampstand. How this contrasts with those equating a plain life with holiness!  The plain, shaker-style in contrast with the ornate work of the lamp provides a picture of the soil versus the shine of metal.  We are dust and to dust we will return.  God is holy and eternal.  This clearly shines a light on the command; “walk humbly with your God.”

It would seem there are conclusions to draw from this.  So often we hear and see those among us taking something simply stated and making it into something more than what was said.  The contrast between plain and ornate might be one.  There are groups who take the ornate to the extreme in their religious furnishings and then there are those who prefer the opposite, the plain; they are those who forbid all expression of intricate design.  Is this even important? It must be in some sense because the last verse cautions the builders of the lampstand:

see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain.

If we apply even these seemingly small details to our lives, how careful must we be to follow the directions given by God for our benefit, directions to live according to His will and not our own?  The principle then might be to be sure we follow God’s directions as given not our ideas of what he meant.  Think on that…

The pictures posted above are examples of an artist’s interpretation of the instructions given, maybe…  They are not the original. They are different from each other.  They do have similarities.  How do we know which is accurate?  We go to the Word of God and read the instructions given. How closely are the instructions followed?   We do the same with the instructions given to us to live according to his will.  How closely are those followed?

“walk humbly with your God.”

Reflections from 2 Kings 1:

  1. The description of Elijah matches the description of John the Baptist given in the New Testament.

(the king) He asked them, “The man who came to meet you and told you these things, what kind of man was he?” “He was a hairy man,” they answered him, “with a leather belt around his waist.”  He said, ” It was Elijah from Tishbe.” 2 Kings 1

John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. – Matthew 3:4

2.  “Man of God”  used the first two times by the commanders of fifty was done sarcastically.  Man of God is a representative of God to us…calls for the same respect one would give an all-powerful God.  The lack of respect was what was punished…with death!  Study of the Old Testament highlights God’s disgust with arrogance and smugness.  Disrespect brought judgement many times.  Something to be very wary of.

Then the king sent a commander of fifty to Elijah, together with his fifty men….The commander climbed up to him(Elijah) and said, ” Man of God, the king says to come down.”  Elijah answered the commander of fifty, “If I am in fact a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and burn you up, along with your fifty men.” Fire came down from heaven, and it burned him up and his fifty men.

The king sent another commander of fifty, together with his fifty men.  He said to him (Elijah), “Man of God, the king says , ‘Come down immediately!’ ” Elijah answered them, “If I am in fact a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and burn you up, along with your fifty men.”  Fire came down from heaven, and it burned up him and his fifty men.

3.  God’s word is powerful…it accomplishes what it sets out to do.  This is done with or without humanity’s belief.  We can participate in it or be at its effect.  Sobering.

Take away:

Israel belongs to God.  When they stray he will not ignore it but take steps to bring them back into alignment with Him and His ways.

Our country has strong foundations in the Judeo-Christian beliefs.  It was founded by deeply religious people whose faith in God led them here to give him honor and practice His ways.  Their primary concern was to have a place where they could do so without hindrance or persecution for their faith. As we continue, as a nation, to honor Him we are blessed.  As we leave His ways and disrespect Him we are faced with the consequences not much different than that faced by the Hebrew nation.

Our history bears the truth that those who serve the Lord bring blessing.  Those who disrespect Him and His commands, bring cursing. We are warned.  What course of action will we take?  Our prayers can make the difference.

From Numbers 16:

8Then Moshe (Moses) said to Korach (Korah), “Listen here, you sons of Levi! 9Is it for you a mere trifle that the God of Isra’el has separated you from the community of Isra’el to bring you close to himself, so that you can do the work in the tabernacle of Adonai and stand before the community serving them? 10He has brought you close and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you. Now you want the office of cohen (Priest) too! 11That’s why you and your group have gathered together against Adonai! After all, what is Aharon (Aaron) that you complain against him?”

12Then Moshe sent to summon Datan (Dathan) and Aviram  (Abiram), the sons of Eli’av  (Eliab). But they replied, “We won’t come up! 13Is it such a mere trifle, bringing us up from a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the desert, that now you arrogate to yourself the role of dictator over us? (ii) 14You haven’t at all brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, and you haven’t put us in possession of fields and vineyards. Do you think you can gouge out these men’s eyes and blind them? We won’t come up!”

*words in parenthesis are English for the Hebrew placed by this author.

The heart of the matter is a grab for power.  It is couched in words of men’s reason. But God.  Truth is revealed to Moses:  “You want the office of priest.  That’s why you and yours have gathered against Adonai!” They made it appear to the assembly as if they were against Moses and Aaron for designating themselves as overseers of the assembly.  They made it look as if the wandering about in the wilderness was Moses’ and Aaron’s doing.  They questioned why they weren’t being taken into the land of milk and honey.  They accuse Moses and Aaron of attempting to keep control; have it their way.  Moses was able to see the truth of the matter.  Moses walked with God and because of this relationship saw beyond the men to the real enemy.  “You have gathered against Adonai!”  There is only one who defies God impudently and that is Satan the enemy of the human soul.  Truth will prevail.  Eyes are blinded, the people are manipulated by the lie.  “Did God say?”  continues to place doubt and cause division.

The political half of the rebellion refused to even come up when Moses called them.  Their arrogance is in full view of the people.  Their response to Moses clearly shows their intent to take authority from him.  They accuse him of blinding the assembly to truth when in fact it is they who do so.

These tactics continue today on so many levels.  Satan uses them to divide God’s people at every opportunity and those who are immature are taken in and deceived.  The assembly heard and were swayed by those rebelling.  None of these were open to instruction from God.  They were full of themselves and their ’cause,’ ideologies, thinking that is skewed away from God.  Unable to receive correction through Moses, they are left wide open to God’s judgment and correction.  Self has once again risen to take its place over God.  The move is subtle but can be heard by those whose ears are open to hear.

In this day, self-esteem led to self-awareness and now to self-identity.  Who do God’s people seek?  Their own identity or God’s?  A warning is being sounded, a caution.  The question: “Did God really say?” led to a lie.  ” He (God) knows that when you eat you will…”  And evil was revealed; was birthed in humanity. This deception continues today in the cloak of seeking identity.  Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, His righteousness is received and identity is revealed.  Then all these things will be added to you.  Matthew 6:33

Pray – Lord we have been given your Word both scripture and in Jesus.  May we heed what it says, apply it to our lives, our thinking and actions so we can build your kingdom, not one of our own making.

Repent – Lord, I’m sorry for the movement away from You.  Please open eyes and ears to see and hear from you.

Ask –  I join with you in asking that we be completely one and those outside the assembly of believers may realize who you are and who you sent.  I ask that your love be manifest in how we love one another.

Yes – Righteous Father, the world has not known you, but I have known you, and these people have known that you sent me.  I have made your name known to them, and I will continue to make it known; so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I myself may be united with them. – Jesus.  I pray this with you, Lord, may it ever be You who is seen and glorified.

John 17:25-26

May I never be guilty of flattering you with my lips…may my heart be always yours, obvious in what I do and say…careful to follow your commands, to give you honor and respect.

From John 4:

31Meanwhile, the talmidim (disciples)  were urging Yeshua (Jesus), “Rabbi, eat something.” 32But he answered, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.” 33At this, the talmidim (disciples) asked one another, “Could someone have brought him food?” 34Yeshua (Jesus) said to them, “My food is to do what the one who sent me wants and to bring his work to completion. 35Don’t you have a saying, ‘Four more months and then the harvest’? Well, what I say to you is: open your eyes and look at the fields! They’re already ripe for harvest! 36The one who reaps receives his wages and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the reaper and the sower may be glad together — 37for in this matter, the proverb, ‘One sows and another reaps,’ holds true. 38I sent you to reap what you haven’t worked for. Others have done the hard labor, and you have benefited from their work.”

From <https://www.bible.com/bible/1275/jhn.4>

*words in parentheses are mine; English for Hebrew.

Humility is a result that comes from realizing that what each accomplishes rests upon the efforts of others and all that is done is the result of God’s work.  The call is given to ‘see.’  There is always work to be done; some work the soil, preparing for those who sow the seed, and those who harvest come after.  God gives the increase.

The kingdom  grows and benefits from the efforts of those who can see and hear the voice of God.  These efforts provide the ‘food’ of which Jesus spoke.  When one is engaged in a project and they are inspired to complete it; all else, even hunger, disappears until it is accomplished.  And the results satisfy more than any food or drink.

O that the church would catch this inspiration from Jesus!  The fields are ripe.  There is so little of real truth and worth today in this society that the hunger for God is increased.  Not a hunger for ‘church’ or even a brand of Christianity for what it has become in much of this world, but a hunger for the genuine Word of God, Jesus, come to give what is missing in today’s world.  He came to give genuine peace of spirit, genuine  love and compassion, genuine praise that is God-centered and not self-centered.

Pray – May my eyes and ears be opened to hear your voice, Lord, directing me to do what you want and bringing your work to completion.

Repent – I repent for the times I do what I want, thinking I am working for you.

Ask – Open my eyes so I can see the fields!  Open my eyes so I can see the harvest ready to reap.  May I be a part of the harvest team you are sending to reap what isn’t sown by us but by you.

Yes – How happy are those who observe Your instruction, who seek You wholeheartedly! Psalm 119:2

From Ephesians:

Therefore stripping off falsehood, let everyone speak truth with his neighbor, because we are intimately related to each other as parts of a body.  Be angry, but don’t sin – don’t let the sun go down before you have dealt with the cause of your anger; otherwise you leave room for the Adversary.

The thief must stop stealing; instead he should make an honest living by his own efforts.  This way he will be able to share with those in need.

Let no harmful language come from your mouth, only good words that are helpful in meeting the need, words that will benefit those who hear them.  Don’t cause grief to God’s Ruach HaKodesh, (Holy Spirit) for he has stamped you as his property until the day of final redemption.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, violent assertiveness and slander, along with all spitefulness.  Instead, be kind to each other, tender-hearted; and forgive each other, just as in the Messiah God has also forgiven you.

Wow, a to-do list.  Those actions will naturally follow in one who loves. ” Love God,” ‘ love your neighbor” are two commands to wake with, go out and come in with, speak sitting down and getting up, place in the mind, heart,  doing of the hands and going of the feet.  Truth reigns in all that is said and done.  Jesus is truth and truth is found in Scripture.

Emotions belong to the individual, are felt but are not in the driver’s seat.  Therefore anger, the most destructive of emotions, must be dealt with, or the enemy has a toehold into the relationship and it quickly becomes a stronghold of bitterness driving believers apart.

Basic principles of good living follow with advice to work with one’s own hands and be able to assist others as a result.  Speaking only what will encourage and help others grow, showing kindness and forgiveness, all are actions that demonstrate a love for God and neighbor.  They are actions that are beneficial to the receiver and giver both.  The ‘stamp’ God places identifies who is his and can be seen by others.  It is seen by way of the actions, words and thoughts.

Pray – I pray for truth to be evident in my life.  I pray that Your stamp on me be obvious to others through my words and actions toward them.

Repent – I repent for using a sharp tongue to respond when it could have been a gentle tongue spoken with love.  I repent for the times I allow stress and fatigue to rule instead of Your love.

Ask – I lie prostrate in the dust; revive me, in keeping with Your word.  I told You of my ways and You answered me; teach me Your laws.  Make me understand the ways of Your precepts, and I will meditate on your wonders.

Yes – Father God, I praise You that the reason Jesus came was to destroy the work of the enemy.  I acknowledge that the one who keeps on sinning is from the enemy for they do not bear Your stamp.  You say no one who is born of God will continue to sin because Your seed has been planted in him.  I will make the right choices to demonstrate how much I love you and transfer that love to my neighbor as well.

“That offends me…” thoughts on perceived ‘judgmental’ statements

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome

Ephesians 4 and Luke 12

A very recent experience has highlighted just how much impact the current manner of thinking has had on everyone, believer and unbeliever alike. Any comment or critique is immediately seen as judgmental and that is as a negative view. It has been said that truth in its first form is negative…

Luke 12: He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? “And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?

The present society has for so long bought into the raising of self-esteem (the definition of the word is enough to raise caution flags) that any criticism, any correction is seen as judgmental. It is. Scripture is full of instruction to judge. Judging is done every day by everyone. Judgment comes into play when deciding where to buy gas, which fruit to choose, what will be eaten from the menu, what will be worn. Quality is judged in areas of retail, food, housing, friendships…the list goes on.  And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? -Jesus

There has been a constant drip, drip, drip, of negativity attached to judgment. If anything is said to an individual that opposes what they hold to, judgment is raised, as in they are being disrespected or hated. All have opinions and some decisions are made based upon those opinions. All have likes and dislikes and all are not in agreement. That does not indicate the suggested companions of judging; hate, dislike, superiority, etc. are implied. If one says they prefer chocolate, those who prefer vanilla or strawberry are not being disrespected or hated. The mentality of every opposing thought being seen as judgmental in the form of passing judgment or sentence upon someone, or of being a statement of hatred or disrespect has gone over the top. It is time to be confident enough in the identity held by an individual that these accusations are not immediately forthcoming from them when faced with conflict or dissenting opinions. It is time to reach for maturity and stability in who one is as Paul states:

We will no longer be infants tossed about by the waves and blown along by every wind of teaching, at the mercy of people clever in devising ways to deceive. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in every respect grow up into him who is the head, the Messiah. …

Where there is offense, those receiving the offense, more properly stated accepting offense, should consider what is making the thing offensive. When the individual is strong in their identity with God, in who they are; they can receive instruction, hear opposing points of view and not take offense. They are grown up into maturity in Christ who is the head…His opinion is what should be of concern. If offense is taken, the question why needs to be answered. At times offense is taken when it is the Holy Spirit who is at work correcting something within the individual. Voiced offense in the form of stating that an opinion or stated truth is judgmental is actually judgmental itself and seeks to silence the spoken or written word.

sshh that offends me...it's judgmental...

sshh that offends me…it’s judgmental…

Revelation 20:4

Then [I saw] the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received [his] mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Job 24:12

The dying groan in the city, And the souls of the wounded cry out; Yet God does not charge [them] with wrong.

It is time to read and understand. Because God does not yet charge the oppressor for their crimes against humanity and those who bear the name of the Lord does not mean He is unaware. As Job learned, we do not question the Creator; we accept His will knowing He keeps the souls of His people; they rise to meet Him and are placed with Christ. Yes there is groaning, the souls cry out for mercy and vengeance and they will receive it. The eyes of the Lord are upon them and the oppressor. There is coming a judgment. Let us who are blessed and remain raise our voice to heaven for our brothers and sisters. Let us sit with them before the throne, weep with them in their pain. We are one in the spirit, we are one in the Lord.

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,

And we pray that all unity will one day be restored.

They’ll know we are Christians by our love,

Yeah, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

We will walk with each other we will walk hand in hand

We will walk with each other we will walk hand in hand

And together we will spread the news that God is in our land

They’ll know we are Christians by our love,

Yeah, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

We will work with each other, we will work side by side,

And we’ll guard each one’s dignity and save each one’s pride.

They’ll know we are Christians by our love,

Yeah, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

All praise to the Father,

From whom all things come,

And all praise to Christ Jesus

His only Son,

And all praise to the Spirit

Who makes us one.

John 13:35

“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Isaiah 59:1

1 Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear.

Numbers 23:19

19 “God [is] not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

The blood of the people of God fills the land. The light of God's Son exposes the evil. The souls rise to meet Him.

The blood of the people of God fills the land. The light of God’s Son exposes the evil. The souls rise to meet Him.

Daniel 2:20, 22

20 Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, For wisdom and might are His. … 22 He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what [is] in the darkness, And light dwells with Him.

Attributes of God we can count on… Not only does He see the atrocities, the evil; He sees those who take action against it and those who sit silently by, turning their head not to see, blocking the news, investing only in their own life, piece of ground, piece of action. We cannot sit silently, ignoring, hoping it will go away or SOMEBODY will do SOMETHING so it won’t come here. Pray without ceasing…listen for the voice of God giving direction…and do not be silent!
