Do not forget…do not neglect…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Psalm 119  Taw vs. 169-173

 Let my cry come before you, O LORD;

 give me understanding according to your word!

  Let my plea come before you;

deliver me according to your word.

 My lips will pour forth praise,

 for you teach me your statutes.

 My tongue will sing of your word,

 for all your commandments are right.

Let your hand be ready to help me,

 for I have chosen your precepts.

  I long for your salvation, O LORD,

 and your law is my delight.

  Let my soul live and praise you,

and let your rules help me.

 I have gone astray like a lost sheep;

seek your servant,

for I do not forget your commandments.

The plea for understanding is a continual thread throughout Psalm 119.  With the request is acknowledgment that true understanding is given by God.  His word is given to give us life, salvation, peace, comfort and righteousness.  Jesus, the spoken Word fulfilled, answers the psalmist’s frequent cry for salvation.  We are so blessed!  We have the spoken Word, now written; we have the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ; we have the constant presence of the Holy Spirit, our comforter.  And yet we forget and wallow in our self-pity parties, decrying our situations in life, losing the joy of the Lord.  The psalmist so sought after what we have at our disposal, to take or to leave it.  The psalmist knew the power in the combination of the Trinity.  We do well to appreciate what we have and give God praise for it.  We do well to take our collective eyes off our situation and do as the psalmist led; look to the Word and presence of God Almighty.  Let us be diligent students of the  gift of God’s word; let us pray with the psalmist for understanding as we meditate upon God’s principles.  Let us give thanks for this gift of life and love so freely given by our Creator.

Nothing new…learn from the past?

Ezekiel 35

Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it, 3 and say to it, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD:

“Behold, O Mount Seir, I am against you;

I will stretch out My hand against you,

And make you most desolate;

4 I shall lay your cities waste,

And you shall be desolate.

Then you shall know that I am the LORD.

5 “Because you have had an ancient hatred, and have shed the blood of the children of Israel by the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, when their iniquity came to an end, 6 therefore, as I live,” says the Lord GOD, “I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; since you have not hated blood, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 Thus I will make Mount Seir most desolate, and cut off from it the one who leaves and the one who returns. 8 And I will fill its mountains with the slain; on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines those who are slain by the sword shall fall. 9 I will make you perpetually desolate, and your cities shall be uninhabited; then you shall know that I am the LORD.

10 “Because you have said, ‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess them,’ although the LORD was there, 11 therefore, as I live,” says the Lord GOD, “I will do according to your anger and according to the envy which you showed in your hatred against them; and I will make Myself known among them when I judge you. 12 Then you shall know that I am the LORD. I have heard all your blasphemies which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are desolate; they are given to us to consume.’ 13 Thus with your mouth you have boasted against Me and multiplied your words against Me; I have heard them.”

14 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “The whole earth will rejoice when I make you desolate. 15 As you rejoiced because the inheritance of the house of Israel was desolate, so I will do to you; you shall be desolate, O Mount Seir, as well as all of Edom—all of it! Then they shall know that I am the LORD.” ’

The Lord judges his own and those outside the chosen people.  He is against self-seeking, self-serving,  bullying, destroying what is given, neglect and laughing at another’s calamity.  We see these actions today from the school yard and home to the top places of government.  We are a people who too quickly  seek our own good at the expense and destruction of others.  God has judged that behavior severely in the past, will the present be any different?

What are we doing!?! …..

Ezekiel 16:20-42

“Moreover you took your sons and your daughters, whom you bore to Me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your acts of harlotry a small matter, 21 that you have slain My children and offered them up to them by causing them to pass through the fire? 22 And in all your abominations and acts of harlotry you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, struggling in your blood.

23 “Then it was so, after all your wickedness—‘Woe, woe to you!’ says the Lord GOD— 24 that you also built for yourself a shrine, and made a high place for yourself in every street. 25 You built your high places at the head of every road, and made your beauty to be abhorred. You offered yourself to everyone who passed by, and multiplied your acts of harlotry. 26 You also committed harlotry with the Egyptians, your very fleshly neighbors, and increased your acts of harlotry to provoke Me to anger.

27 “Behold, therefore, I stretched out My hand against you, diminished your allotment, and gave you up to the will of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd behavior. 28 You also played the harlot with the Assyrians, because you were insatiable; indeed you played the harlot with them and still were not satisfied. 29 Moreover you multiplied your acts of harlotry as far as the land of the trader, Chaldea; and even then you were not satisfied.

30 “How degenerate is your heart!” says the Lord GOD, “seeing you do all these things, the deeds of a brazen harlot.

“You erected your shrine at the head of every road, and built your high place in every street. Yet you were not like a harlot, because you scorned payment. 32 You are an adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband. 33 Men make payment to all harlots, but you made your payments to all your lovers, and hired them to come to you from all around for your harlotry. 34 You are the opposite of other women in your harlotry, because no one solicited you to be a harlot. In that you gave payment but no payment was given you, therefore you are the opposite.”

‘Now then, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD! 36 Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because your filthiness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your harlotry with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children which you gave to them, 37 surely, therefore, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved, and all those you hated; I will gather them from all around against you and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness. 38 And I will judge you as women who break wedlock or shed blood are judged; I will bring blood upon you in fury and jealousy. 39 I will also give you into their hand, and they shall throw down your shrines and break down your high places. They shall also strip you of your clothes, take your beautiful jewelry, and leave you naked and bare.

40 “They shall also bring up an assembly against you, and they shall stone you with stones and thrust you through with their swords. 41 They shall burn your houses with fire, and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women; and I will make you cease playing the harlot, and you shall no longer hire lovers. 42 So I will lay to rest My fury toward you, and My jealousy shall depart from you. I will be quiet, and be angry no more.

Loving the Lord in return for his love and then turning away from him to other interests is described as a form of prostitution, but different.  Different in that the one turning away is paying the others for what the Lord gave freely.  No wonder proverbs calls it foolishness.  To do this to one who can destroy not only your body but your very soul is foolish indeed.  Jesus said:

“…Matthew 10:28  – And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell….”

The nature of God includes wrath.  It is seen towards those who disrespect him with their self-importance.  Not only this but they included others in their actions, the innocent, the children.

“…you took your sons and your daughters, whom you bore to Me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured….”

Brings to mind our present day abortion issue.  We continue to flaunt self-worth at the expense of others, self-interest at the expense of the unborn child and also our children born to us; through neglect and abuse we demonstrate thinking only about ourselves.  Abortions are common and child abuse abounds.  Are we calling down the wrath of God today as Israel did  in Ezekiel’s days?

“…I will lay to rest My fury toward you, and My jealousy shall depart from you. …” and

“…you have slain My children and offered them up to them by causing them to pass through the fire?…”

Has God changed?  He is the same yesterday, today and forever.  What to do?  Be active in opposition to the killing of the unborn?  Be active in opposition to the neglect and abuse of children?

Counter with the teaching and message of the love of God and God’s blessings on the lives of those who follow him?  We need to hear the voice of God, in the anguish of the abused, neglected and aborted.  We need to obey his voice and be found faithful to him, not prostituting our allegiance to others or ourselves.
