Isaiah 66:15-24

 “For behold, the LORD will come in fire, and his chariots like the whirlwind, to render his anger in fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.

 For by fire will the LORD enter into judgment, and by his sword, with all flesh; and those slain by the LORD shall be many.

 “Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, eating pig’s flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the LORD.

 “For I know their works and their thoughts, and the time is coming to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory,

and I will set a sign among them. And from them I will send survivors to the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands far away, that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my glory among the nations.

 And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations as an offering to the LORD, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the LORD, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD.

 And some of them also I will take for priests and for Levites, says the LORD.

 “For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the LORD, so shall your offspring and your name remain.

 From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the LORD.

 “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

This is one place that verifies the existence of what we call ‘hell.’

“… “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”…”

It is not a desirable place to be.

This is one place where we read of the promise of a new heaven and a new earth; also of always being in His presence.

“… “For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the LORD, so shall your offspring and your name remain...”

Let us be sure to be among the clean vessels,

“…bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD.…”

washed in the blood of Jesus, coming always to worship in His presence.

This also concludes Isaiah; fitting ending would you say?

shoot from the stump

Isaiah 11:1-5

 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,

and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,

the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the Spirit of counsel and might,

the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

  And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see,

or decide disputes by what his ears hear,

  but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,

and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;

and he shall strike the earth

with the rod of his mouth,

and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,

and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

Any who garden know that cutting down a tree is not the end of it.  New life will spring from the stump and the roots will continue to nourish it.  The proud and the arrogant, those trusting in their own abilities and designs as if they were of their own creation will be cut down.  This comes as a consequence of a turning away from their God and Creator.  But from the stump that remains, new life springs forth.

That tree, that nation, that people had their roots in the knowledge of their Creator and God and in their living according to His commands; loving their God above all others and loving their fellowmen, women and children.  Our nation has the same roots.  Whatever comes of our present day arrogance and turning away from those beginnings we can be sure that we who remain true to those beginnings, that knowledge will see new life.

We may see the tree of our nation cut down; we can be the stump that remains true to our God and brings forth new life.  This shoot of Jesse is thought to be the Christ who brings new life to all who believe in him.  Let us remain true to Him, love our God and our fellow man, woman and child.  Let us be a shoot also of new life as we shine His light into our dark world.

Do life His way…

Isaiah 1:7-20

Your country lies desolate;

 your cities are burned with fire;

 in your very presence

foreigners devour your land;

it is desolate, as overthrown by foreigners.

 And the daughter of Zion is left

 like a booth in a vineyard,

 like a lodge in a cucumber field,

 like a besieged city.

 If the LORD of hosts

 had not left us a few survivors,

 we should have been like Sodom,

 and become like Gomorrah.

Hear the word of the LORD,

you rulers of Sodom!

 Give ear to the teaching of our God,

 you people of Gomorrah!

  “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the LORD;

I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams

 and the fat of well-fed beasts;

 I do not delight in the blood of bulls,

 or of lambs, or of goats.

  “When you come to appear before me,

who has required of you

 this trampling of my courts?

 Bring no more vain offerings;

 incense is an abomination to me.

 New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations—

 I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly.

  Your new moons and your appointed feasts

my soul hates;

 they have become a burden to me;

I am weary of bearing them.

  When you spread out your hands,

 I will hide my eyes from you;

 even though you make many prayers,

 I will not listen;

 your hands are full of blood.

 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean;

 remove the evil of your deeds from

 before my eyes;

 cease to do evil,

learn to do good;

seek justice,

correct oppression;

 bring justice to the fatherless,

plead the widow’s cause.

 “Come now, let us reason together,

says the LORD:

 though your sins are like scarlet,

 they shall be as white as snow;

 though they are red like crimson,

 they shall become like wool.

  If you are willing and obedient,

you shall eat the good of the land;

  but if you refuse and rebel,

 you shall be eaten by the sword;

 for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

The images of desolation and destruction are seen today in our world.  Are they images of judgment?  Rather, are they not simply the consequences of our ways?  The focus and laws of spirit and natural were spoken into existence.  We are given the guidebook to good health, prosperous living, and peace but as a people we choose to do our own thing, do it our way – life that is.  As a result, our actions have impact upon others and our world that is destructive.  When a child rebels, it wants its own way; that way often has potential to bring it harm.  It lacks the wisdom of time that parents have.  So it is with humanity.  We lack the wisdom of the Creator who can tell us what the impact of our actions will bring.  And He has in His Word.  We rebel; we pay.

Then like children, we start doing right; without a change of heart it is meaningless .  We have prayers, feasts, celebrations, give offerings; we do without a change of heart.  We come to our temple, we worship, we pray, we give and we leave to do as we want.  No change.  As a child will go back to the rebellious behavior, we go back to learned behaviors that are in opposition to God’s commands.

The Word is clear: we are to take steps to ultimately be obedient.  Washing; a symbol of removing the dirt of our deeds; then cease the deed that brought the dirt.  Learn a new way; renew the mind by what is put into it.  Feed it the Word of God!  Seek justice and correct oppression.  Begin to do again this time in obedience to His way.  We must Know His way to do it. There are many who would teach us, but only one Word.  Salvation comes through Christ; he cleanses us, then fills us.  We study His commands and go out and do them, do life His way.

“Come now, let us reason together,

says the LORD:

 though your sins are like scarlet,

 they shall be as white as snow;

 though they are red like crimson,

 they shall become like wool.

  If you are willing and obedient,

you shall eat the good of the land;

  but if you refuse and rebel,

 you shall be eaten by the sword;

 for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

Motivation…

Ezra 7:21-28

Ezra 7:21-28

  “And I, Artaxerxes the king, make a decree to all the treasurers in the province Beyond the River: Whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, requires of you, let it be done with all diligence,  up to 100 talents of silver, 100 cors of wheat, 100 baths of wine, 100 baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much.   Whatever is decreed by the God of heaven, let it be done in full for the house of the God of heaven, lest his wrath be against the realm of the king and his sons.  We also notify you that it shall not be lawful to impose tribute, custom, or toll on anyone of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the doorkeepers, the temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.

“And you, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God that is in your hand, appoint magistrates and judges who may judge all the people in the province Beyond the River, all such as know the laws of your God. And those who do not know them, you shall teach.   Whoever will not obey the law of your God and the law of the king, let judgment be strictly executed on him, whether for death or for banishment or for confiscation of his goods or for imprisonment.”   Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, who put such a thing as this into the heart of the king, to beautify the house of the LORD that is in Jerusalem,  and who extended to me his steadfast love before the king and his counselors, and before all the king’s mighty officers. I took courage, for the hand of the LORD my God was on me, and I gathered leading men from Israel to go up with me.

Confirmation is a powerful encourager and stimulator.  It motivates and mobilizes.  God laid it upon Ezra to study and know His word.  Then He moved upon the leadership of that day to provide Ezra with confirmation and the means to carry out his commission.  Ezra had set his heart to study God’s word and it didn’t end there.  He set his heart to teach it and do it.  This was not just knowledge based for knowledge’s sake.  It was life changing.  It became his life, what he did and further he taught it to others.  Powerful enough to get the king’s attention.  Let us set our heart to study God’s Word, not just for knowledge but to do it and to teach it.  It is not enough to study.  It is not enough to teach it.  It must be lived.  In the living, teaching and study it comes alive.  People are drawn to life.  Christ is the life in us.  It is not enough to study His words, not enough to teach his words, we must live his words.  He gives life abundantly and that is not limited to stuff.  It encompasses all that life is.

Living…how?

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Colossians 3:18:25

Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.  Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.   Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.  Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.   Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,   knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.   For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.

“How then, shall we live?”  continues.  There is an underlying principle at work here.  The principle of doing everything in love as unto the Lord.  We obey, serve, cherish, love, and work as if the Lord himself asked us to. If we would do it willingly and heartily, with all our heart, for our attitudes would then be driven by our love for our God and our fellowmen and women.  All this present day bickering, arguing, and fighting; all this negativity would cease. We would be amazed both at how much we could accomplish and at how the quality of our life would improve.

Let us be self-less not selfish; loving not performing; caring not despising.  Let the changes begin in us as we deal with one another lovingly.  This is not a call to give in to that which is not of God but a call to live in peace, as much as lies within us, with our brothers and sisters.  May others see our peace with one another and desire it.  In so doing we will be spreading the ways of the kingdom of God, for there will be no room for our selfish desires there.

Comfort and hope…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Psalm 119 Zayin 45-56

 Remember your word to your servant,

 in which you have made me hope.

 This is my comfort in my affliction,

 that your promise gives me life.

 The insolent utterly deride me,

 but I do not turn away from your law.

  When I think of your rules from of old,

 I take comfort, O LORD.

Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked,

 who forsake your law.

 Your statutes have been my songs

 in the house of my sojourning.

  I remember your name in the night,

 O LORD, and keep your law.

This blessing has fallen to me,

 that I have kept your precepts.

Here there is comfort and hope in God’s Word.  Here there is promise of life.  The word of God is held in high esteem.  Today that is not generally true with the exception of a few.  It may be spoken of with words that honor but it is not used; it is not lived.  It is often traded for words issuing from mankind.  Even in the church it is only given a passing glance as congregations lean on what the pulpit delivers rather than what the Word of God says.  Many believers could tell us very little about what is actually in the Word.  David demonstrates the opposite.  The word of God is life to him.  And to those of us who can say the same, it is encouraging to hear one who loves God’s principles as much as this passage declares.  We would do well to develop a hunger for God’s word.

“The blessing has fallen to me, that I have kept your precepts.”

Principles to live by that bring hope, comfort and blessings.  May we continue to find time to seek the face of God in his Word.   May we continue to thank Him for His Word and live by it daily.  Blessed be the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 119      Daleth. Vs 25-32

 My soul clings to the dust;

 give me life according to your word!

When I told of my ways, you answered me;

 teach me your statutes!

 Make me understand the way of your precepts,

and I will meditate on your wondrous works.

 My soul melts away for sorrow;

strengthen me according to your word!

Put false ways far from me

 and graciously teach me your law!

I have chosen the way of faithfulness;

 I set your rules before me.

I cling to your testimonies, O LORD;

let me not be put to shame!

I will run in the way of your commandments

 when you enlarge my heart!

We seem to cling to things of this life David calls “dust.”  Dust is also referred to as dirt containing nutrients for seed of this world; having little to do with the spiritual, much to do with the physical.  We can trade our desire for dust  for life that comes from the Word of God.  We can ask for understanding as we read or listen to the Word.  And we will hear God answer us.  Let’s meditate on that which gives life!

“…My soul clings to the dust;

 give me life according to your word! …”
