Proverbs 16:10-

Divine inspiration is on the lips of the king, so his mouth must be faithful when he judges.  The balance and scales of justice have their origin in Adonai; all the weights in the bag are his doing.  It is an abomination for a king to do evil, for the throne is made secure by righteousness.

Any position of authority can be seen as ‘kingship.’  Those holding positions must take care that their words are inspired of God.  This requires knowledge of God, who he is and what he does.  This requires reliance on the one who places individuals in these positions.  There is a requirement to be faithful to the justice as put forth in God’s Word.  The position held is secure only as righteous actions and words prevail.  Leaders take note.  From home to government…

Consequences of foolish counsel…

Isaiah 19:11-15

  The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish;

the wisest counselors of Pharaoh

give stupid counsel.

How can you say to Pharaoh,

“I am a son of the wise,

a son of ancient kings”?

 Where then are your wise men?

Let them tell you

that they might know what the LORD of hosts has purposed against Egypt.

 The princes of Zoan have become fools,

and the princes of Memphis are deluded;

those who are the cornerstones of her tribes

have made Egypt stagger.

 The LORD has mingled within her

a spirit of confusion,

and they will make Egypt stagger in all its deeds,

 as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

  And there will be nothing for Egypt

that head or tail, palm branch or reed,

may do.

When foolish counsel is given and heeded there can no good come from it.

“…The princes of Zoan have become fools,

and the princes of Memphis are deluded; …”

These are those to give counsel to Pharoah, the head of the people.  We have the same.  Advisors to our leaders who are foolish and delusional.  God’s word says when these are heeded and their advice is followed:

“…there will be nothing…

that head or tail, palm branch or reed,

may do. …”

Consequences of poor advice, advice that is given based upon man’s abilities and pride, when followed will come.  Those consequences are given over and over in scripture.  The unbeliever has no recourse.

For the believer there are many promises of provision, refuge, care, love given by God to his people.  Blessed be the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Head and tail…

Isaiah 9:8-17

 The Lord has sent a word against Jacob, and it will fall on Israel;

  and all the people will know, Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, who say in pride and in arrogance of heart:

 “The bricks have fallen, but we will build with dressed stones; the sycamores have been cut down, but we will put cedars in their place.”

  But the LORD raises the adversaries of Rezin against him, and stirs up his enemies.

The Syrians on the east and the Philistines on the west devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

  The people did not turn to him who struck them, nor inquire of the LORD of hosts.

  So the LORD cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed in one day—

  the elder and honored man is the head, and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail;

  for those who guide this people have been leading them astray, and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.

 Therefore the Lord does not rejoice over their young men, and has no compassion on their fatherless and widows; for everyone is godless and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

The head and the tail; the leaders and the followers, all are guilty of rejecting God.  When he punishes, they do not turn to him in repentance, rather the pride that brought judgment remains and they obstinately rebuild. These are not a people who did not know God, they are his people, carry his name.  Their history tells them of His greatness and all that He has done for them.  As a people we see a turning away from our past, our history, our heritage.  We become proud in ourselves and boast of what we have accomplished.  We forget the One who provides, gives life and graces with gifts and abilities.  Time to take inventory and see the true nature of our hearts.  There can be no pride in ourselves; only trust in the Lord.

Ezra 8:1-20

These are the heads of their fathers’ houses, and this is the genealogy of those who went up with me from Babylonia, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king:  Of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom. Of the sons of Ithamar, Daniel. Of the sons of David, Hattush.  Of the sons of Shecaniah, who was of the sons of Parosh, Zechariah, with whom were registered 150 men.  Of the sons of Pahath-moab, Eliehoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men.   Of the sons of Zattu, Shecaniah the son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men.  Of the sons of Adin, Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men.  Of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men.  Of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him 80 men.  Of the sons of Joab, Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men.   Of the sons of Bani, Shelomith the son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men.  Of the sons of Bebai, Zechariah, the son of Bebai, and with him 28 men.   Of the sons of Azgad, Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 men.   Of the sons of Adonikam, those who came later, their names being Eliphelet, Jeuel, and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men.   Of the sons of Bigvai, Uthai and Zaccur, and with them 70 men.

I gathered them to the river that runs to Ahava, and there we camped three days. As I reviewed the people and the priests, I found there none of the sons of Levi.  Then I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, leading men, and for Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of insight,  and sent them to Iddo, the leading man at the place Casiphia, telling them what to say to Iddo and his brothers and the temple servants at the place Casiphia, namely, to send us ministers for the house of our God. And by the good hand of our God on us, they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of Mahli the son of Levi, son of Israel, namely Sherebiah with his sons and kinsmen, 18;  also Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, with his kinsmen and their sons, 20;  besides 220 of the temple servants, whom David and his officials had set apart to attend the Levites. These were all mentioned by name.

This is a gathering of the leadership of the people of Israel.  Israel finds itself in bondage, slaves to the ruling kings of Babylon.  Their position is a direct result of their sin for they had left worshiping the Lord God Jehovah to worship the gods of the surrounding nations.  This sin included those in positions of leadership.  Now they are once again receiving favor of God and are able to return to Jerusalem.  The leadership is gathered first; for the return is not just physical but also spiritual. People look to leaders for teaching and guidance. There is a burden of trustworthiness laid on them.  These spoken of in Ezra are traced back to Aaron, brother of Moses, on whom was laid the responsibility of ministry in the temple.  Our leaders have an awesome responsibility.  They deserve our prayers.
