Judgment?…or forgiveness?

Ezekiel 32:17-28

It came to pass also in the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, that the word of the LORD came to me, saying:

18 “Son of man, wail over the multitude of Egypt,

And cast them down to the depths of the earth,

Her and the daughters of the famous nations,

With those who go down to the Pit:

19 ‘Whom do you surpass in beauty?

Go down, be placed with the uncircumcised.’

20 “They shall fall in the midst of those slain by the sword;

She is delivered to the sword,

Drawing her and all her multitudes.

21 The strong among the mighty

Shall speak to him out of the midst of hell

With those who help him:

‘They have gone down,

They lie with the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.’

22 “Assyria is there, and all her company,

With their graves all around her,

All of them slain, fallen by the sword.

23 Her graves are set in the recesses of the Pit,

And her company is all around her grave,

All of them slain, fallen by the sword,

Who caused terror in the land of the living.

24 “There is Elam and all her multitude,

All around her grave,

All of them slain, fallen by the sword,

Who have gone down uncircumcised to the lower parts of the earth,

Who caused their terror in the land of the living;

Now they bear their shame with those who go down to the Pit.

25 They have set her bed in the midst of the slain,

With all her multitude,

With her graves all around it,

All of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword;

Though their terror was caused

In the land of the living,

Yet they bear their shame

With those who go down to the Pit;

It was put in the midst of the slain.

26 “There are Meshech and Tubal and all their multitudes,

With all their graves around it,

All of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword,

Though they caused their terror in the land of the living.

27 They do not lie with the mighty

Who are fallen of the uncircumcised,

Who have gone down to hell with their weapons of war;

They have laid their swords under their heads,

But their iniquities will be on their bones,

Because of the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.

28 Yes, you shall be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised,

And lie with those slain by the sword.

The phrase, ‘those who live by the sword shall fall by the sword’ comes to mind.  Those who ‘spread terror in the land of the living—-went down to the grave, in shame, with their weapons of war.

“…they caused their terror in the land of the living….”

“…All around her grave,

All of them slain, fallen by the sword,…”

“…Who have gone down to hell with their weapons of war;…”

The Lord will act justly, will avenge the deaths of the innocent.

“…you shall be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised,

And lie with those slain by the sword….”

There is forgiveness for those who will accept it.  There is judgment and death for those who won’t.

Peace and salt, not sin and hell…

Mark 9:42 – 50

 “But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone hung around your neck. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell  with two hands. If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one foot than to be thrown into hell with two feet. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. It’s better to enter the Kingdom of God with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,  ‘where the maggots never die and the fire never goes out.’ “For everyone will be tested with fire. Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other.”

 Sin has consequences and those who cause others to sin bear consequences.  Hand, foot and eye; what we  do, where we  go and what we see.  All can assist in spreading the Word of God, and putting into practice the commands and principles to live by or all can assist in working against the Word of God. These are Jesus’ words, the Father said; “Listen to Him.”  Do we hear Him?  Hell is a real place with a fire and worm that is eternal – “the fire never goes out.”  These are Jesus’ words; “Listen to him.”

We have a contrast between those who work for Christ and those who work against him.  Whether they are in the inner circle or outside it matters not.  Consequences for sin or reward for following Christ.  Placement is not the determining factor in the end result; action is.  He sums it up with “Be at peace with one another.”  There is no place for quarreling over who is greatest, who can or should do the work of the Lord in peace.  That peace among us is the best indicator that we are in unity, that we are more concerned with what the Lord wants than what we want, that we are more in tuned to His words than our own.  Peace is evident when the Word of God is active and alive in us no matter the situation.
