Consequences of foolish counsel…

Isaiah 19:11-15

  The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish;

the wisest counselors of Pharaoh

give stupid counsel.

How can you say to Pharaoh,

“I am a son of the wise,

a son of ancient kings”?

Where then are your wise men?

Let them tell you

that they might know what the LORD of hosts has purposed against Egypt.

The princes of Zoan have become fools,

and the princes of Memphis are deluded;

those who are the cornerstones of her tribes

have made Egypt stagger.

The LORD has mingled within her

a spirit of confusion,

and they will make Egypt stagger in all its deeds,

as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

And there will be nothing for Egypt

that head or tail, palm branch or reed,

may do.

When foolish counsel is given and heeded there can no good come from it.

“…The princes of Zoan have become fools,

and the princes of Memphis are deluded; …”

These are those to give counsel to Pharoah, the head of the people.  We have the same.  Advisors to our leaders who are foolish and delusional.  God’s word says when these are heeded and their advice is followed:

“…there will be nothing…

that head or tail, palm branch or reed,

may do. …”

Consequences of poor advice, advice that is given based upon man’s abilities and pride, when followed will come.  Those consequences are given over and over in scripture.  The unbeliever has no recourse.

For the believer there are many promises of provision, refuge, care, love given by God to his people.  Blessed be the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Not us, but God…

II Corinthians 10

I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!—I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh.  For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.  For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.   We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete. Look at what is before your eyes. If anyone is confident that he is Christ’s, let him remind himself that just as he is Christ’s, so also are we.   For even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed.  I do not want to appear to be frightening you with my letters.   For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.”   Let such a person understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present.   Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.   But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you. For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. For we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ.  We do not boast beyond limit in the labors of others. But our hope is that as your faith increases, our area of influence among you may be greatly enlarged,   so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another’s area of influence.   “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”  For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

Paul highlights that what we do for the kingdom of God we do for God not ourselves.  Also, as we are faithful, the Lord brings the increase, Christ’s gospel is the draw; if not, what grows out of the work will fail.

“…”Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”  For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends. …”

There is a power available to do great things, but that power is not ours; it is the Lord’s and we do well to guard against taking credit for what is another’s.

“…We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,…”

“… For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.   …”

We overcome the voices that bombard us with clamor and confusion; we do this with the Word of God, therefore it is His power that overcomes as we avail ourselves of it.  We do not need to be in a state of confusion, we do not need to be in a place of arguing over words and thoughts.  We do use the  power of God through Jesus Christ to defeat the thoughts that would try to hinder the work of God in us and in others.  Be alert, be in the word, be grounded in Christ and give Him all the glory ,honor and praise for what He does.

What about that gift of tongues?…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

I Corinthians 14:1-12

Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played? And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning,  but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.

Essentially the gift of other tongues is for the one receiving it.  All other gifts are for the building up of the church.  These gifts all benefit someone, the one who holds them and those interacting with that one.  The gift of tongues, however, is to build up the one receiving the gift.  Let us be sure to exercise our gifts, but to also be alert to the end, will it benefit others as well as ourselves.

“…So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. …”

There is a time when in prayer, we do not know how to pray so the Spirit prays for us.  We receive the power from God that comes with the gift; but let us not be inappropriate with it.  Paul reminds us later that God is a God of order and not of confusion.  Let us not be found guilty of causing confusion.  Confusion does not build up, rather it becomes a hindrance to the work of God. With that said:  “So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. “
