Where is the love?

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Hosea 2

Ah, land of the ‘free and the brave,’ you are to be pitied for you have no peace, no contentment.   You receive little and want more; you receive more and want more still.  Constant striving, strife with one another for what is not yours.

Hear the Word of the Lord, Adonai.  He has a grievance against the land; there is not truth, no faithful love or knowledge of God in the land; only swearing, and lying, killing and stealing and committing adultery!  All bounds are broken with one blood crime following another.  Therefore the land mourns, and everyone living there languishes, wild animals too, and the birds in the air; even the fish in the sea are removed.

But no one should quarrel or rebuke, because there is quarreling there is stumbling in the day and the prophet stumbles at night with those in the land.

The answer to this is this:  God says I will woo you by bringing you to a desert and speaking to your heart.  I will bless you with vineyards and give you hope.  You will respond once again as you did before…

This land of ‘the free and the brave’ is too comfortable, complacent.  There are a lot of complaints but no action, no turning away from the present existence with its earthly comforts toward the God who gave those comforts.  Instead there is a complaining spirit in the land with a lot of finger-pointing and no responsibility taken.  There is a subtle move away from the God of the Scriptures to a God of personal experience created in the image of man.  It is time to turn back to the God of His Word, back to the Christ who is the living Word.  It is time to speak words of life and not death.

Truth; a Treasure to share…

2 Timothy 1 and 2:

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.    Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus…   Remind [them] of these things, charging [them] before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.  Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.  And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,

Those hungry for more of God, wanting an intimate relationship with Him fulfilling His purpose for His creation will have to be willing to ‘do the work.’  Nothing of value comes without the investment of time and effort.  The gift of life and the opportunity for relationship are freely given at a great cost made by the Creator.  The receiver bears responsibility for the acknowledgement of the gift, the receiving of the gift and uniting with the Christ who made it all possible.  That is but the start of the most exciting adventure of the individual’s lifetime; a lifetime that spans eternity.

In 2 Timothy, a letter to Timothy from Paul, and by its inclusion in Holy Scripture, a letter to all believers, the life after the initial event of accepting the gift from God becomes one of service, love, patience and obedience to the commands of Jesus.  Paul reminds the reader of the gift, what it is, who it came from and how blessed the recipient is, but he also goes on to explain the patience to be exercised in the study of God’s Word to be able to fully understand the gift and be able to pass it on to others.  It is a gift of Good News, something ‘too good to be true.’  It requires sharing.

To avoid the foolish arguments, to survive the attacks, to be fully equipped to share the Good News requires the patience of time in study, meditation and prayer.  This requires an understanding of scripture beyond the reading of God’s Word; it requires time allowing the Holy Spirit to do the work He does in bringing understanding. This requires setting priorities.  The lives of most are busy, with family, jobs and daily living.  Yet many find time for their ‘passion’ whatever it may be, time for electronic entertainment, time for recreation.  May the believer find the time for the passion of knowing their God more intimately though His Word.  He has revealed Himself to all mankind in Word and person.  The opportunity to know Him better is always available.

The spirit of power, love and sound mind enables the believer to engage in the knowing process.  The diligence put forth by the believer provides the opportunity for the Holy Spirit to do the work of understanding.  The believer has a precious treasure those around them would love to share.  How can they know if they are not told?  This Good News, to good to be true, is the Truth found in Christ and in the Word of God.  This truth comes by faith and trust.  There is no need to engage in arguments or debates.  The Word, the Truth stands for itself.  May the believer be willing to let go of self and take the time to invest in the treasure found in the Word of God.
