Pigs n Pearls…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome

Matthew 7:6-

Don’t give to dogs what is holy, and don’t throw your pearls to the pigs. If you do they may trample them under their feet, then turn and attack you. – Jesus

This calls for reflection and meditation. There was a time when Jesus called a Gentile woman a dog. Her perseverance won his grace and her request was granted. He told her he had come to the house of Israel. She asked for the crumbs from the living bread he brought to the children of Israel.

Would that conversation , knowledge of it shed light on restricting what is holy, and taking care of pearls of wisdom? Proverbs likens wisdom to pearls. So is there a principle to be found here?

Essentially, though in some places this is not true, it isn’t common practice to give dogs that which is kept for family or honored guests. Pearls are generally worn about the neck and not thrown out to be trampled as the oyster shells are on driveways and parking lots.

At the risk of being called politically or socially offensive, who are the dogs and pigs? There are those with whom a sharing of the gospel becomes a vicious attack as it states in the Word. There are those to whom it is useless to share any wisdom gained as Proverbs advises time and time again; calling those who do not ‘hear’ what is said, fools. There is a sense of knowing the worth of something. That which is holy has great value; the pearls of wisdom as well. There is the knowledge that there are some truths that are lost on those without the Holy Spirit’s presence and guidance.

This calls for discernment. This calls for knowing who is ready to receive and appreciate the worth of God’s truths. This also speaks to relationships with others. Guard what is precious; don’t cheapen it by broadcasting it.
