How do we lap the water?

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Judges &:4-8

And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.

And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.

And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.

So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.  from eSword

Do we sit in our churches, lapping up the water? Content to allow others to look out for us? Who do we trust? Is our faith in the Lord and Him only, or do we depend upon the arms of humanity? Even if those arms are in the pulpit our trust is misplaced if we are content to rest in that place. Our trust and faith is to be in the Lord only; this will keep us from deception – not just a deception of humanity that is world-wise but also deception from the leadership and ourselves. Be not deceived;

[James 1:26 NKJV] 26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion [is] useless; from Blue Letter Bible

[2Timothy 3:12-17 ESV] 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.  from Blue Letter Bible

Be alert, aware, ears tuned to God’s voice and with a sure knowledge of His Word to use as a plumb-line. Those who lapped the water putting their own hand to their mouth were ready to move when told, alert to the conditions around them, had their trust in the Lord God who would give the word; not in the systems of man, the reinforcements who were sent home.  They were confident in the Lord and him alone.  They were useful to the Lord.  They were equipped for the work ahead of them.  And God would get the glory.

Lap the water ready at any instant to do his bidding.
