Are we there yet?

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Joshua 15:12-32

And the west boundary was the Great Sea with its coastline. This is the boundary around the people of Judah according to their clans.

According to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, he gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the people of Judah, Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron (Arba was the father of Anak).

And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak, Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak.

And he went up from there against the inhabitants of Debir. Now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher.

And Caleb said, “Whoever strikes Kiriath-sepher and captures it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.”

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.

When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she got off her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?”

She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have given me the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans.

The cities belonging to the tribe of the people of Judah in the extreme south, toward the boundary of Edom, were Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur,

 Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah,

Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan,

Ziph, Telem, Bealoth,

 Hazor-hadattah, Kerioth-hezron (that is, Hazor),

Amam, Shema, Moladah,

 Hazar-gaddah, Heshmon, Beth-pelet,

 Hazar-shual, Beersheba, Biziothiah,

 Baalah, Iim, Ezem,

 Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah,

 Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah,

Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon: in all, twenty-nine cities with their villages.

Looking at all the names of the cities so far, this conquest was no small undertaking. Can we say that the work of the Lord is great no matter if it is the taking of many cities and villages or the remaking of our heart and self. Our inner being is deceitful, sinful wanting its own way. When we turn toward Christ we become a new creature; the old ways are conquered and destroyed, completely. Are we willing partners in the cleansing? Soul-searching time; are we hindering the work of the Spirit within us? Our inheritance is a clean heart, a life abundant in His will. We can live in a joy-filled abundant life-filled land as we yield to his will.

In the midst of the descriptions and details of the inheritance we find another truth. Ask and you shall receive. The daughter asks for land then asks for water as well. The water is needed to make the land profitable. We can come to our Father and ask for the ‘land’ and then ask for the Holy Spirit, the water needed to bring the land to life. We receive the inheritance of our promised land; a spiritual place in which we have peace, joy, love, all the fruits of a life given over to the Lord, when we receive the gift of salvation that Christ went to the cross to give to us. We have salvation from the wages of sin in our lives, freedom from the death of eternal separation from God. With that salvation comes an inheritance; a place of spirit that is ours for the asking. A place of peace, no fear, trust. And we can ask for water for that ‘land’, the Holy Spirit who waters our souls with understanding, remembrance, comfort and allows the ‘land’ to flourish with the fruit that bears evidence that He is in us. This indicates the need on our part of participation; taking part in feeding the soul from the Scriptures and watering the place our faith brings us to by the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Are we there yet?
