Follow God, not man…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Joshua 3:1-8

Then Joshua rose early in the morning and they set out from Shittim. And they came to the Jordan, he and all the people of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.

At the end of three days the officers went through the camp

and commanded the people, “As soon as you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the Levitical priests, then you shall set out from your place and follow it.

Yet there shall be a distance between you and it, about 2,000 cubits in length. Do not come near it, in order that you may know the way you shall go, for you have not passed this way before.”

Then Joshua said to the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you.”

And Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on before the people.” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people.

The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

And as for you, command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, ‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.'”

Being led by the Spirit of God involves being alert and aware of His commands. Two things stand out here. Have we ever seen a crowd of people following a leader? It is hard for them to keep a distance and trust. They, as we all do, “want to see!” Yet they were told to follow at a distance of 1000 yards! This meant not only trusting in those carrying the ark, but also trusting in each other, those going before one another. The ark had the Presence of God, so we see first we trust in the lead of the Spirit.

It is important if we are to be led by the Spirit as children of God we must be alert and aware of the Spirit. We must be sure to follow what God says, as He says it, not as we manipulate or interpret it. Also, we follow Him alone, not mankind, no matter how well-intentioned or logical they may seem.

Those carrying the ark had the awesome responsibility of following the Spirit.  They were leading the people and with the trust placed in them came the responsibility to know God, the ability to hear God and to lead accurately down His path or they could easily lead the people astray of God’s intended path.  We need to be sure to hold our leaders up in prayer that they know His Word and follow it truly, in truth.  The temptation is always present to deviate and follow our own agendas.  Be sure that agenda is in line with God’s. His will not ours.
