Isaiah 30:27-33

Behold, the name of the LORD comes from afar, burning with his anger, and in thick rising smoke; his lips are full of fury, and his tongue is like a devouring fire;  his breath is like an overflowing stream that reaches up to the neck; to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction, and to place on the jaws of the peoples a bridle that leads astray.  You shall have a song as in the night when a holy feast is kept, and gladness of heart, as when one sets out to the sound of the flute to go to the mountain of the LORD, to the Rock of Israel.  And the LORD will cause his majestic voice to be heard and the descending blow of his arm to be seen, in furious anger and a flame of devouring fire, with a cloudburst and storm and hailstones.  The Assyrians will be terror-stricken at the voice of the LORD, when he strikes with his rod.  And every stroke of the appointed staff that the LORD lays on them will be to the sound of tambourines and lyres. Battling with brandished arm, he will fight with them.  For a burning place has long been prepared; indeed, for the king it is made ready, its pyre made deep and wide, with fire and wood in abundance; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.

The nature of God includes anger and fury at those who deny him.  Those who are guilty of the oppression of people of God will face his fury.  He is just and he does not will that any should perish; but…

God does not change, he is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.  His word stands once spoken.  He  gives ample opportunity for salvation from judgment.  He gave out of love for his creation that they might turn from evil ways, cease being oppressor and give him honor.  Those who refuse, face his fire of judgment.  We have his promise of salvation from this judgment.  We have his promise of love rather than judgment when we become his child in the spirit, accepting the gift of salvation through his son, Jesus Christ.  We cannot deny one part of God’s nature and say we know God.  When we begin relationships with one another we accept all of each other.  We accept the whole person.  When we accept the existence of God into our life, begin to grow in our knowledge of him, we stand amazed at the extent of his love for us.  He is a fearsome God with the power of life and death.  We do well to accept life from him.  We have the story of love; we also have ample warnings of what it is to face his judgment.  How thankful the believer can be that they have begun a relationship with the God who created them in love and who continues to love them through eternity.

Begin to see the face of God, all the facets of this Supreme Being, as the many fiery facets of a beautiful diamond, breathing fire and love.

Isaiah 30:18-24

Therefore the LORD waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the LORD is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.    For a people shall dwell in Zion, in Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry. As soon as he hears it, he answers you.    And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher.    And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.  Then you will defile your carved idols overlaid with silver and your gold-plated metal images. You will scatter them as unclean things. You will say to them, “Be gone!”  And he will give rain for the seed with which you sow the ground, and bread, the produce of the ground, which will be rich and plenteous. In that day your livestock will graze in large pastures, and the oxen and the donkeys that work the ground will eat seasoned fodder, which has been winnowed with shovel and fork.   And on every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be brooks running with water, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.    Moreover, the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day when the LORD binds up the brokenness of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow.

Do we have adversity? Do we suffer affliction?  It is no mystery; it comes.

“… And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, …”

We are not left powerless.  He waits for our cry and answers.

“…He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry. As soon as he hears it, he answers you. …”

Do we believe him when he says, “I am the Lord who heals you.”?  Do we believe him when he says,  you will see your Teacher; you will hear his word.  “This is the way, walk in it…”?  Do we believe him when he promises to wipe away our tears, bind our wounds, bless us with abundance, show us mercy?  Do we believe him?

Isaiah 30:1-7

“Ah, stubborn children,” declares the LORD, “who carry out a plan, but not mine, and who make an alliance, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin; who set out to go down to Egypt, without asking for my direction, to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!   Therefore shall the protection of Pharaoh turn to your shame, and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt to your humiliation.  For though his officials are at Zoan and his envoys reach Hanes, everyone comes to shame through a people that cannot profit them, that brings neither help nor profit, but shame and disgrace.” An oracle on the beasts of the Negeb. Through a land of trouble and anguish, from where come the lioness and the lion, the adder and the flying fiery serpent, they carry their riches on the backs of donkeys, and their treasures on the humps of camels, to a people that cannot profit them.  Egypt’s help is worthless and empty; therefore I have called her “Rahab who sits still.”

Politics are rampant with people fighting to be free of oppressive systems and others moving to return to them!  Individuals set free of abuse return to the same.  Let our prayers be that we are aware of this in our own lives and refuse to return to that which Christ has set us free of.  Let us keep our hope in Him alone.

Backwards, upside down days…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Isaiah 29:15-24

Ah, you who hide deep from the LORD your counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”   You turn things upside down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, “He did not make me”; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?  Is it not yet a very little while until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest?

In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see.  The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the LORD, and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel. For the ruthless s  hall come to nothing and the scoffer cease, and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off,  who by a word make a man out to be an offender, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right.  Therefore thus says the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: “Jacob shall no more be ashamed, no more shall his face grow pale.   For when he sees his children, the work of my hands, in his midst, they will sanctify my name; they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.   And those who go astray in spirit will come to understanding, and those who murmur will accept instruction.”

Right always triumphs over evil.  We are assured of that.  And those who cannot hear will begin to hear.  Those who question and complain will be changed.  Understanding will come.  In Christ all this is so.  For the believer, the promise of joy in the Lord is good.  Christ’s blood covers us and the Holy Spirit grants wisdom and understanding.  This is now!

lip-service?…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Isaiah 29:9-14

Astonish yourselves and be astonished; blind yourselves and be blind! Be drunk, but not with wine; stagger, but not with strong drink!  For the LORD has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes (the prophets), and covered your heads (the seers).   And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.”  And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.”   And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,  therefore, behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”

Not all acts of God which cause humanity to gaze in wonder are necessarily desirable.  When the people of Egypt were subjected to the acts of God in the various plagues, while they caused wonder they were not desirable.  Perhaps this passage also speaks of things that are not to be viewed as a good thing we would want to befall us!  Masses of frogs everywhere, for one, would not be a thing to rejoice at while it would cause a sense of wonder!  What is found in this passage implies that the people are warned but they do not heed.  It is as if their eyes cannot see, ears cannot hear; even when give something in writing the understanding  is absent.

Are we among a people who only give God lip-service?

“… this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men, ….”

Will it be necessary for God to  cause something to occur to get our attention and once again our hearts?  Would it not be more pleasant for us to simply give Him our hearts?  He has provided a way for us through Christ Jesus; a way to a relationship with Him, reliance upon Him only.  Where do we find ourselves?  In the crowd giving lip-service or in the group who has and is giving their hearts, that inner core of themselves to Him?  What does the difference look like?

Standing in the gap…

Re-blogging.  Seems it continues to apply to this day and time.  Are we praying?  Are we standing in the gap with Christ?

Ekekiel 22:17-31

The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to Me; they are all bronze, tin, iron, and lead, in the midst of a furnace; they have become dross from silver. 19 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Because you have all become dross, therefore behold, I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. 20 As men gather silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin into the midst of a furnace, to blow fire on it, to melt it; so I will gather you in My anger and in My fury, and I will leave you there and melt you. 21 Yes, I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and you shall be melted in its midst. 22 As silver is melted in the midst of a furnace, so shall you be melted in its midst; then you shall know that I, the LORD, have poured out My fury on you.’ ”
23 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 24 “Son of man, say to her: ‘You are a land that is not cleansed [fn1] or rained on in the day of indignation.’ 25 The conspiracy of her prophets [fn2] in her midst is like a roaring lion tearing the prey; they have devoured people; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in her midst. 26 Her priests have violated My law and profaned My holy things; they have not distinguished between the holy and unholy, nor have they made known the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they have hidden their eyes from My Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them. 27 Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood, to destroy people, and to get dishonest gain. 28 Her prophets plastered them with untempered mortar, seeing false visions, and divining lies for them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD,’ when the LORD had not spoken. 29 The people of the land have used oppressions, committed robbery, and mistreated the poor and needy; and they wrongfully oppress the stranger. 30 So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. 31 Therefore I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; and I have recompensed their deeds on their own heads,” says the Lord GOD.

Is there anyone who can stand in the gap?  The list of offenses continues levied against Israel for which the wrath of God will fall.  The offenses include making all things being the same; there is no distinction between that which is holy and that which is common;

“…they have not distinguished between the holy and unholy, nor have they made known the difference between the unclean and the clean;…”

there is robbery and the destruction of individual’s lives and livelihood; there is the oppression of the poor and needy; there is the cover up of the sins of the religious leaders; there is the cover up of the sins of the leadership of the people; there is the killing of people for personal gain.

“… to destroy people, and to get dishonest gain…”

Sounds like today’s headline news!! Extortion, robbery, mistreating the alien in the land, oppression of poor and weak all show up in today’s news.  How shall our land escape a similar event?  The Lord looked for someone to stand in the gap. Gap is defined in BLB as a breach in the wall, a broken wall, bursting forth.  The imagery that creates is something was contained behind the wall and now it is escaping, and now there is no denying that it exists.  Like a broken pot with a candle inside and now one can see the light pouring forth.  What now pours out for all to see is the evil in the land.  It is so pervasive there is no denying it. Can there be one who like the little boy, put their finger in the dyke to hold back the flood that threatens to engulf all of mankind?  There is evil in the land, will it engulf all in the land?  Who can stand in the gap and hold back the forces of evil?  That one individual who would build a wall between the sins so obvious and a righteous God.  We have that one in our Lord Jesus Christ. He stood in the gap between our sins and our Creator so that we would not be destroyed.  What of our nation, our planet, our world, time, space and place?  Is there someone to stand in the gap, someone who will pray for the oppressed, the unborn slaughter, the starving of people for gain, the mistreatment of the aliens in our land; someone who will work to right the wrongs the general population wreaks upon each other? Who will spread the word of Christ and his salvation from the consequences of that sin?  Who will fight for justice?

Isaiah 29:1-8

Ah, Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! Add year to year; let the feasts run their round. Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be moaning and lamentation, and she shall be to me like an Ariel. And I will encamp against you all around, and will besiege you with towers and I will raise siegeworks against you. And you will be brought low; from the earth you shall speak, and from the dust your speech will be bowed down; your voice shall come from the ground like the voice of a ghost, and from the dust your speech shall whisper. But the multitude of your foreign foes shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the ruthless like passing chaff. And in an instant, suddenly, you will be visited by the LORD of hosts with thunder and with earthquake and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.  And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, all that fight against her and her stronghold and distress her, shall be like a dream, a vision of the night.  As when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he is eating and awakes with his hunger not satisfied, or as when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he is drinking and awakes faint, with his thirst not quenched, so shall the multitude of all the nations be that fight against Mount Zion.

Life goes on as usual and no one sees the coming judgment.  People count time and party.  They are brought down when judgment comes first in the form of nations against nations and then by the forces of nature.  And they speak to us from the grave, from the dust they give evidence of what came to them.  Those who inflict pain upon others are never satisfied.  We can be so thankful that we are satisfied.  Our spirit is full in the Lord.  The contrast is clear.  Those found with God need not ever fear the wrath of God.
