Isaiah 13:1-8

  The oracle concerning Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.

  On a bare hill raise a signal;

cry aloud to them;

wave the hand for them to enter

 the gates of the nobles.

  I myself have commanded

my consecrated ones,

and have summoned my mighty men

to execute my anger,

my proudly exulting ones.

 The sound of a tumult is on the mountains

as of a great multitude!

The sound of an uproar of kingdoms,

of nations gathering together!

The LORD of hosts is mustering

a host for battle.

  They come from a distant land,

 from the end of the heavens,

the LORD and the weapons of his indignation,

to destroy the whole land.

  Wail, for the day of the LORD is near;

as destruction from the Almighty

it will come!

 Therefore all hands will be feeble,

and every human heart will melt.

 They will be dismayed:

pangs and agony will seize them;

they will be in anguish like a woman in labor.

They will look aghast at one another;

their faces will be aflame.

This day of the Lord is not pleasant for it comes with judgment.  We should take note that the judging is done by God not any man, woman or child.  Can we get to a place where we no longer take offense at one another, but like Jesus with Peter, recognize we each are tools in the hands of the Almighty God and we serve His purpose?  Better to search and see what He is teaching us through others.  When we are the ones being used, better to just walk away and let the Spirit of the Lord complete the work than to try to become like God and understand the whys and wherefores.  Simply be willing workers for Him, obedient in all ways.  Those who will learn and grow will; those who choose to take offense have allowed pride to get in the way of the Spirit in their lives.  All the judgment we read of in scripture can be traced back to a prideful heart.  O may we learn humility, true humility that allows us to be taught and grow more like Jesus each day.

Our song…

Isaiah 12

You will say in that day:

 “I will give thanks to you, O LORD,

for though you were angry with me,

your anger turned away,

that you might comfort me.

 “Behold, God is my salvation;

I will trust, and will not be afraid;

for the LORD GOD is my strength

and my song,

and he has become my salvation.”

  With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

And you will say in that day:

“Give thanks to the LORD,

call upon his name,

make known his deeds among the peoples,

proclaim that his name is exalted.

  “Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously;

let this be made known in all the earth.

  Shout, and sing for joy,

O inhabitant of Zion,

for great in your midst

is the Holy One of Israel.”

This is our song!  We have received the joy of salvation.  We have received light into our darkness and it is the light of Jesus Christ bringing us his love and the love of the Father ever providing for his creation.  He brings salvation from the penalties due us for our actions and thoughts that have been contrary to his commands.  He brings us forgiveness and freedom to fully enjoy the life he has given us.  We know who we are and we know who He is and we accept, receive and believe what he says.  Blessed be the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Restoration

Isaiah 11:12-16

 He will raise a signal for the nations

and will assemble the banished of Israel,

and gather the dispersed of Judah

from the four corners of the earth.

 The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart,

and those who harass Judah shall be cut off;

Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah,

and Judah shall not harass Ephraim.

 But they shall swoop down on the shoulder

 of the Philistines in the west,

and together they shall plunder the people of the east.

They shall put out their hand against

Edom and Moab,

and the Ammonites shall obey them.

 And the LORD will utterly destroy

the tongue of the Sea of Egypt,

and will wave his hand over the River

with his scorching breath,

and strike it into seven channels,

and he will lead people across in sandals.

 And there will be a highway from Assyria

for the remnant that remains of his people,

as there was for Israel

when they came up from the land of Egypt.

We have the restoration of Israel before us.  And the blessing of the Lord returns to them.  We can learn from this the truth that the Lord will always restore his own and return his blessing to them.  We may find ourselves in the midst of a judgment that consists simply of the consequences that follow actions.  We have this truth that when we humbly seek the face of God, he restores us and returns His blessings to us.

Isaiah 11:6-11

The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,

and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,

and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;

and a little child shall lead them.

 The cow and the bear shall graze;

their young shall lie down together;

and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,

and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den.

 They shall not hurt or destroy

in all my holy mountain;

for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD

as the waters cover the sea.

In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

In that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that remains of his people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea.

No matter what happens we can be sure the Lord takes care of his own.  The peace predicted is well worth looking forward to, and it appears that life goes on…  It gives a reason to rejoice that we are called His people and all His promises extend to us.  Blessed be the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.  In that day…

the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD

as the waters cover the sea.

New life…

shoot from the stump

Isaiah 11:1-5

 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,

and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,

the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the Spirit of counsel and might,

the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

  And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see,

or decide disputes by what his ears hear,

  but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,

and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;

and he shall strike the earth

with the rod of his mouth,

and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,

and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

Any who garden know that cutting down a tree is not the end of it.  New life will spring from the stump and the roots will continue to nourish it.  The proud and the arrogant, those trusting in their own abilities and designs as if they were of their own creation will be cut down.  This comes as a consequence of a turning away from their God and Creator.  But from the stump that remains, new life springs forth.

That tree, that nation, that people had their roots in the knowledge of their Creator and God and in their living according to His commands; loving their God above all others and loving their fellowmen, women and children.  Our nation has the same roots.  Whatever comes of our present day arrogance and turning away from those beginnings we can be sure that we who remain true to those beginnings, that knowledge will see new life.

We may see the tree of our nation cut down; we can be the stump that remains true to our God and brings forth new life.  This shoot of Jesse is thought to be the Christ who brings new life to all who believe in him.  Let us remain true to Him, love our God and our fellow man, woman and child.  Let us be a shoot also of new life as we shine His light into our dark world.

Bringing down the arrogant…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Isaiah 10:28-34

  He has come to Aiath;

he has passed through Migron;

at Michmash he stores his baggage;

  they have crossed over the pass;

at Geba they lodge for the night;

Ramah trembles;

Gibeah of Saul has fled.

 Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim!

Give attention, O Laishah!

O poor Anathoth!

  Madmenah is in flight;

the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety.

This very day he will halt at Nob;

he will shake his fist at the mount of the daughter of Zion,

the hill of Jerusalem.

 Behold, the Lord GOD of hosts

will lop the boughs with terrifying power;

the great in height will be hewn down,

and the lofty will be brought low.

  He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an axe,

and Lebanon will fall by the Majestic One.

This is a poetic description of judgment and fear.  The arm of the Lord uses the army of man to bring justice against his people for their arrogance and pride and the same is then turned around on the army used.  There is no tolerance for arrogance and pride.  Can we learn this lesson and keep ourselves humble before the Lord our God?  What can we do except he give us the ability and resources?  Who among us can create something as he has done out of nothing?

lean on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Isaiah 10:20-27

 In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.

  For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness.

 For the Lord GOD of hosts will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD of hosts: “O my people, who dwell in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrians when they strike with the rod and lift up their staff against you as the Egyptians did.

For in a very little while my fury will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction.

  And the LORD of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. And his staff will be over the sea, and he will lift it as he did in Egypt.

  And in that day his burden will depart from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because of the fat.”

God will always have a people.  We can look at the storm around us or we can lean on Him. He destroys in anger those who would try to supplant him, but there are always those who truly love and serve Him alone.  And the work and growth of the kingdom of God continues though the whole world be in unrest.

Evil is destroyed by the Holy One.  Jesus said we will worship in spirit and in truth.  We know our Father, our Creator.  That knowledge is truth and separates us from evil.  That knowledge allows the spirit to grow and mature.  That truth brings power in the middle of despair.  Something the unbeliever cannot experience…

“do not be afraid…”

Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it,

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Isaiah 10:15-19

 Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it,

 or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?

 As if a rod should wield him who lifts it,

or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!

 Therefore the Lord GOD of hosts will send wasting sickness among his stout warriors,

and under his glory a burning will be kindled,

 like the burning of fire.

 The light of Israel will become a fire,

 and his Holy One a flame,

 and it will burn and devour

his thorns and briers in one day.

 The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land

 the LORD will destroy,

 both soul and body,

and it will be as when a sick man wastes away.

  The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few

that a child can write them down.

Narrow is the way and few there be that find it – Jesus

A mighty nation made up of many nations is likened to a forest of many trees.  The king who was used to punish Israel is compared to an axe in God’s hands used as an instrument of judgment.  And the axe begins to boast of its strength…

Do we not fully realize who God is?  Would we as the axe and rod in this passage elevate ourselves over the one who created us?  The king became arrogant and haughty, taking credit for what had been accomplished; the conqueror of many nations.  Did he not know God?  Did he not realize who it was that used him for His will?  Perhaps not, perhaps so.  Either way he was not now giving credit to the God who made him strong but taking credit for his own strength.  God now turns to him and requires of him an accounting.  We cannot boast of our own deeds as if we were responsible for our accomplishments without honoring the one who gave us the abilities to do what we have done.  Did we create ourselves?

And now, God levies that same judgment against the king who was used to deliver God’s punishment against Israel.  The message is quite clear; God hates and does not tolerate haughtiness and arrogance.  There is a spiritual law at work here.  There are consequences for breaking laws.  Jump from a high place; we will go down and suffer harm.  Would we the created count ourselves greater than the Creator?  There are consequences that follow such an attitude, such behavior.

We can learn from this.  We can be sure to honor our Creator and Savior.  We can be grateful for the graces and gifts he has given us.  We serve an awesome God who is capable of mighty things; who has set in motion laws of nature and spirit that we at times cannot fathom.  We can know and honor who He is and what He does.  We can be aware of His love and mercy to those who acknowledge Him.

Will we be the remnant who stand, who will not compromise, who will acknowledge the God of the universe and will remain true to Him giving Him honor and glory, receiving His grace.

Who did this?!!!…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Isaiah 10:5-14

  Ah, Assyria, the rod of my anger; the staff in their hands is my fury!

 Against a godless nation I send him, and against the people of my wrath I command him, to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

 But he does not so intend, and his heart does not so think; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few;

 for he says: “Are not my commanders all kings?

 Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus?

 As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,

  shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her images?”

 When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, he will punish the speech of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes.

  For he says: “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding; I remove the boundaries of peoples, and plunder their treasures; like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.

  My hand has found like a nest the wealth of the peoples; and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken, so I have gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved a wing or opened the mouth or chirped.”

Circumstances do not determine the condition of the heart and soul.  They do not confirm righteousness or ability.  Our heart condition, the health of our relationship with God determines that.  The king had success but deceived himself with thoughts of his own greatness and ability.  Pride goes before a fall; the greater they are the greater they fall.

We can take care of our inner self; keep it righteous in Christ, keep it tuned to the Spirit of God.  We can know who our source is and keep our thoughts and words full of His thoughts and words.

Dangerous waters…

Isaiah 10:1-4

 Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression,

 to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!

 What will you do on the day of punishment,

in the ruin that will come from afar?

To whom will you flee for help,

and where will you leave your wealth?

  Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners

or fall among the slain.

For all this his anger has not turned away,

and his hand is stretched out still.

Could this be a description of the laws in our land allowing the murder of children?  Or the move to determine the time of living and death for the elderly, disabled and otherwise challenged human beings?  Are we any different from these who received harsh judgment?  Be warned, be aware and keep oneself right in Christ.  This is what we can do.  We can pray for the Lord’s intervention and for a spirit of spiritual change when as a people we turn back to our God in repentance.

What will you do on the day of punishment,

in the ruin that will come from afar?
