Right, righteous, righteousness…

Psalm 119 Tsadhe vs 137-144

 Righteous are you, O LORD,

and right are your rules.

  You have appointed your testimonies in righteousness

and in all faithfulness.

 My zeal consumes me,

because my foes forget your words.

 Your promise is well tried,

and your servant loves it.

 I am small and despised,

yet I do not forget your precepts.

  Your righteousness is righteous forever,

and your law is true.

 Trouble and anguish have found me out,

 but your commandments are my delight.

 Your testimonies are righteous forever;

give me understanding that I may live.

There is that which is right and that which is not.  We live in an age that would deceive us into a mindset that says this is not so.  That alone would identify the source!  It is not of God!

“…Righteous are you, O LORD,

and right are your rules. …”

This truth has been tried and found true over time.  Therefore it is no longer theory it is law.  It has moved from “I think…”  to “This is so…”

God’s precepts are right, true and faithful.  If we follow them we find the promise of life and abundance filled life at that.  When we don’t we open ourselves up to the consequences.  And because we do not live alone we are at the effect of those who do not.  In that place God is faithful to bring us through the consequences shaping us in the process.  We can truly say with the psalmist…

“…Trouble and anguish have found me out,

 but your commandments are my delight. …”

“…give me understanding that I may live. …”

Wherever we find ourselves is life; He is there and He is truth.

Shedding tears…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Psalm 119 Pe vs 129-136

Your testimonies are wonderful;

therefore my soul keeps them.

The unfolding of your words gives light;

it imparts understanding to the simple.

I open my mouth and pant,

because I long for your commandments.

Turn to me and be gracious to me,

as is your way with those who love your name.

Keep steady my steps according to your promise,

and let no iniquity get dominion over me.

Redeem me from man’s oppression,

that I may keep your precepts.

Make your face shine upon your servant,

and teach me your statutes.

My eyes shed streams of tears,

because people do not keep your law.

“… The unfolding of your words gives light; …”

As understanding comes from the Holy Spirit it truly is as if a light has come one; not instantly but bit by bit as if unfolding before us, this part then that.  And the light guides the steps we take when we are both alert and willing.

Is it possible to be enclosed in darkness and not be aware of it?  Absolutely and many who believe find themselves in that place because they are unawares.  Unaware of the sources of darkness that continually bombard us till we buy into the false ways of men.

“…let no iniquity get dominion over me. …” “… Redeem me from man’s oppression, …”

There is the oppression of constant thoughts and suggestions posed by the voices around us.  They can lead us into iniquity that binds us and blinds us.  We are in constant need of the unfolding light that

“…imparts understanding to the simple. …”

We do not have to be highly educated; that can be a hindrance, we only need to spend time with the Words of God, asking for his illumination.

  “…Make your face shine upon your servant, …”

Let us then, continue the journey seeking the face of God for wisdom and guidance.  Let us be willing to share what we learn and receive with those who cross our paths.  We can truly say with the psalmist that our eyes shed tears because people do not keep His law, they do not love God and they do not love their fellow-man.  It is becoming a world that seeks its own; its own ways, its own authority, its own desires without thought for the consequences to themselves and to those around them.  We are in a world that has rejected God the creator and would erase all knowledge of Him if possible.  This impacts us and our children, our loved ones.  We cannot be caught unawares; we cannot be caught silent.  Stand therefore; stand firm in the faith that God is over all; God loves and God redeems.  Stand and share…

“…My eyes shed streams of tears,

because people do not keep your law….”

Words of gold…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Psalm 119 Ayin vs 121-128

I have done what is just and right;

do not leave me to my oppressors.

Give your servant a pledge of good;

let not the insolent oppress me.

My eyes long for your salvation

and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise.

Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love,

and teach me your statutes.

I am your servant; give me understanding,

that I may know your testimonies!

It is time for the LORD to act,

for your law has been broken.

Therefore I love your commandments above gold,

above fine gold.

Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right;

I hate every false way.

Do thoughts come, unbidden, to oppress us?  The question is what to do when that happens?  Is it enough to deny the thoughts?  Wouldn’t it be good to not only turn it away but also to replace it with the words of God?

“…My eyes long for your salvation

and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise.

Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love,

and teach me your statutes. …”

gold

“…Therefore I love your commandments above gold,

above fine gold….”

Do we long to hear the voice of God?  Let us be still; let His Word sink into our consciousness.

“…I am your servant; give me understanding,

that I may know your testimonies! …”

Let it become such a part of us that it seems to have  always been there.  In that place we can begin to know who speaks in our minds and in our hearing.  We begin to know what is the perfect will of God.  We can identify the false ways because we know with His understanding the truth.

“…Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right;

I hate every false way. …

It is wise to fear the judgment of God…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Psalm 119 Samekh vs 113-120

I hate the double-minded,

but I love your law.

You are my hiding place and my shield;

I hope in your word.

Depart from me, you evildoers,

that I may keep the commandments of my God.

Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live,

and let me not be put to shame in my hope!

Hold me up, that I may be safe

and have regard for your statutes continually!

You spurn all who go astray from your statutes,

for their cunning is in vain.

All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross,

therefore I love your testimonies.

My flesh trembles for fear of you,

and I am afraid of your judgments.

Rather than use the word judge since it has gathered so much negativity people only hear and use it in one manner; lets use discern.  The psalmist is laying out examples of discernment in action.  Avoid the double-minded.  According to this we can’t have it both ways.  We will always end up giving one of two more focus, more reliance.  And so we choose, man’s way or God’s?

Our hope is in the word of God.  God says through scripture that Christ is the way, the life and the truth.  He is called the Word made flesh.  God speaks and it is.  He says He loves us; it is so.  He says we can have a relationship with him; it is so.  This is our hope; God’s word speaks true.

We do not spend time with those who do not love God, do not live by His principles.  We, rather, spend time with Him and those who love Him and follow His word.  We can discern who they are by their actions, their daily life.

Loving God means we do not want to be found among those who don’t.

A lamp and a light…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Psalm 119 Nun vs 105-112

Your word is a lamp to my feet and

 a light to my path.

  I have sworn an oath and confirmed it,

 to keep your righteous rules.

 I am severely afflicted;

 give me life, O LORD, according to your word!

  Accept my freewill offerings of praise,

O LORD, and teach me your rules.

 I hold my life in my hand continually,

but I do not forget your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me,

but I do not stray from your precepts.

  Your testimonies are my heritage forever,

for they are the joy of my heart.

 I incline my heart to perform your statutes

 forever, to the end.

In a world of darkness the light is sought.  In a world of uncertainty that which is sure is sought.  In a world of confusion, order is sought. In a world of deceit, that which is true is sought.  In a world of death, life is sought.  “Your word is a lamp…and a light…”  “give me life…according to your word…” “…the wicked have laid a snare…I do not stray from your percepts…”

We are surrounded, bombarded with multiple attempts to leave the way set before us by God every day.  These are the snares, attempts to take our minds, our thoughts captive.  Ads abound that tell us we want to remain forever young, we want to have stuff, what is important is what is new, or innovative or sexy.  These are snares that begin a mind-set that takes us away from a holy life lived for God.  They seem innocent and that is the bait.  Where they lead is toward self and selfish desires; they lead away from a desire to please the God of the universe who created us and loves us.

Being immersed in his word brings a vision that is clear, not clouded.  When one is fed daily the words of God; the snares become obvious and distasteful.  We are not the sum total of the money in our pockets.  We are created, loved beings.  “…Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord, and teach me your rules.”  Rules, precepts, statutes, law are used interchangeably — all lead to sound principles to live by.

Seeking…

Seeking to know God;

not just of Him.

Seeking to realize His constant presence;

not just the evidence that He has been there.

Seeking to understand how who He is and what He does impacts us;

not just awareness of circumstances past, present, future.

Seeking confirmation of His involvement in our affairs, our selves;

not just words spoken by others whether in prayer, song or message.

Seeking intimate relationship not unlike that shared by husband and wife, parent and child;

not just lip service, effort and works.

Seeking the genuine love of God manifested in our beings and consciousness;

not just empty desire met by the stuff of creation.

Seeking to know God.

Time well spent…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Psalm 119 Mem vs 97-104

Oh how I love your law!

It is my meditation all the day.

Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,

for it is ever with me.

 I have more understanding than all my teachers,

 for your testimonies are my meditation.

 I understand more than the aged,

 for I keep your precepts.

 I hold back my feet from every evil way,

in order to keep your word.

 I do not turn aside from your rules,

for you have taught me.

 How sweet are your words to my taste,

sweeter than honey to my mouth!

Through your precepts I get understanding;

 therefore I hate every false way.

Wiser than my teachers!  The aged!  Thanks to the word of God and his precepts.  Greater understanding due to meditation on the Word.  Are we puzzled, confused, unable to make clear decisions?  We then need to go to the Word of God and not only read but meditate.  Memorize and reflect upon it, giving time and allowing the Holy Spirit to give the understanding and wisdom David speaks of here.  We get to know our friends by spending time with them.  We get to know God by spending time with Him.

The choice is clear…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Psalm 119 Lamedh vs 89-96

Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed

 in the heavens.

  Your faithfulness endures to all generations;

 you have established the earth, and it stands fast.

 By your appointment they stand this day,

 for all things are your servants.

  If your law had not been my delight,

 I would have perished in my affliction.

  I will never forget your precepts,

for by them you have given me life.

 I am yours; save me,

 for I have sought your precepts.

The wicked lie in wait to destroy me,

 but I consider your testimonies.

 I have seen a limit to all perfection,

 but your commandment is exceedingly broad.

He has spoken…it is forever without end.  Salvation is sure.  Our prayer joins with the psalmist, we will not forget the Lord’s word, we will live by its principles for that is life!  Who do we listen to, who do we look to?  The Lord is who we seek for his word stands.  The words of men fail, destroy, decay.  They bring death and decrease.  The words of God are faithful, endure, create and build; they last forever.  The choice is clear for life; choose God, choose Christ, choose the Holy Spirit.  One who creates, one who saves and one who guides.  We are blessed!

His promise…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Psalm 119 Kaph vs 81-88

 My soul longs for your salvation;

I hope in your word.

 My eyes long for your promise;

I ask, “When will you comfort me?”

 For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke,

yet I have not forgotten your statutes.

  How long must your servant endure?

When will you judge those who persecute me?

 The insolent have dug pitfalls for me;

they do not live according to your law.

  All your commandments are sure;

they persecute me with falsehood; help me!

They have almost made an end of me on earth,

but I have not forsaken your precepts.

 In your steadfast love give me life,

that I may keep the testimonies of your mouth.

More and more of Jesus can be seen.  This could have been his prayer.  The son of David crying out to his Father.  He endured lies, he never left teaching and following the ways of the word.  His life was challenged; they crucified him and life was restored to him and because of that we have a promise of life as well.

God’s steadfast love gave Jesus life, gives us life, and Jesus kept the testimonies as we keep the same.  We search the Word, we mine the golden nuggets of truth, we apply them to our lives and we are assured that life eternal with God began the day we said yes to Jesus, yes to God, accepting his gift of love.
