Broken love brings…

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans

Comments, thoughts and reflections welcome.

Hosea 12

“Ephraim feeds on the wind,

And pursues the east wind;

He daily increases lies and desolation.

Also they make a covenant with the Assyrians,

And oil is carried to Egypt.

 “The LORD also brings a charge against Judah,

And will punish Jacob according to his ways;

According to his deeds He will recompense him.

He took his brother by the heel in the womb,

And in his strength he struggled with God.

Yes, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed;

He wept, and sought favor from Him.

He found Him in Bethel,

And there He spoke to us—

That is, the LORD God of hosts.

The LORD is His memorable name.

So you, by the help of your God, return;

Observe mercy and justice,

And wait on your God continually.

“A cunning Canaanite!

Deceitful scales are in his hand;

He loves to oppress.

 And Ephraim said,

‘Surely I have become rich,

I have found wealth for myself;

In all my labors

They shall find in me no iniquity that is sin.’

“But I am the LORD your God,

Ever since the land of Egypt;

I will again make you dwell in tents,

As in the days of the appointed feast.

I have also spoken by the prophets,

And have multiplied visions;

I have given symbols through the witness of the prophets.”

 Though Gilead has idols—

Surely they are vanity—

Though they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal,

Indeed their altars shall be heaps in the furrows of the field.

Jacob fled to the country of Syria;

Israel served for a spouse,

And for a wife he tended sheep.

By a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt,

And by a prophet he was preserved.

 Ephraim provoked Him to anger most bitterly;

Therefore his Lord will leave the guilt of his bloodshed upon him,

And return his reproach upon him.

The Lord repeats often the anger and bitterness that results when turning away from love.  We see this in our daily lives. Marriage break-ups and family disruptions all carry the same end results.  Love is extended, the relationship flourishes, there is bountiful fruit; joy, peace, harmony, prosperity.  And then one of the two turns away toward another and bitterness, anger, wrath, and pain follow.  The relationship crumbles and the fruit withers and dies.  There is pain and harm extending at times to violence.  These are daily truths we live in and with.

These are also the truths of broken relationships with the Lord God.  We reap the end results when we turn from Him and His gift of love.  Humanity continually treats their Creator with disrespect and dishonor and so will continue to reap the results; all the while lamenting an absent God!

What can we expect?

“…Therefore his Lord will leave the guilt of his bloodshed upon him,

And return his reproach upon him….”

As believers who have received the love and continue in it let us not fail to give evidence of its benefits and present the truths of its existence to a dark world.  Lift the love of God in Christ for all to see in our lives, daily.  Be a current prophet!

“…By a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt,

And by a prophet he was preserved.…”

The Lord gives ample warning before the consequences of sin kick in.  Over and over He sends prophets to warn and advise His creation to return to Him.

“…I have also spoken by the prophets,

And have multiplied visions;

I have given symbols through the witness of the prophets.”…”

Today the need for a return to the Lord is as great as it was then.  We who love and serve the Lord are now given the charge to live so the truth of His love is seen in us.  Our joy can be so great it overflows to those around us creating desire in others to know the Lord as we know Him.  Let us be found faithful to shine with the love and joy of the Lord and proclaim His mercy given through the sacrifice of His son on the cross.

“…So you, by the help of your God, return;

Observe mercy and justice,

And wait on your God continually….”
