Faithful, not adulterous…

Hosea 4:10-19

For they shall eat, but not have enough;

They shall commit harlotry, but not increase;

Because they have ceased obeying the LORD.

“Harlotry, wine, and new wine enslave the heart.

My people ask counsel from their wooden idols,

And their staff informs them.

For the spirit of harlotry has caused them to stray,

And they have played the harlot against their God.

They offer sacrifices on the mountaintops,

And burn incense on the hills,

Under oaks, poplars, and terebinths,

Because their shade is good.

Therefore your daughters commit harlotry,

And your brides commit adultery.

 “I will not punish your daughters when they commit harlotry,

Nor your brides when they commit adultery;

For the men themselves go apart with harlots,

And offer sacrifices with a ritual harlot.

Therefore people who do not understand will be trampled.

“Though you, Israel, play the harlot,

Let not Judah offend.

Do not come up to Gilgal,

Nor go up to Beth Aven,

Nor swear an oath, saying, ‘As the LORD lives’—

 “For Israel is stubborn

Like a stubborn calf;

Now the LORD will let them forage

Like a lamb in open country.

“Ephraim is joined to idols,

Let him alone.

Their drink is rebellion,

They commit harlotry continually.

Her rulers dearly love dishonor.

 The wind has wrapped her up in its wings,

And they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Marriage, its contract, the vows and love,  its fruit the children are all used to symbolize our relationship  between God and His people.  Jesus continues the comparison as do the writers of the New Testament.  It is a picture to which we can relate as a social race through our own experiences.  Those of us who have suffered through divorce or separation from a spouse due to unfaithfulness  and the resulting death to a relationship and its dreams have a deeper understanding.  God likens the move from Him to beliefs and practices other than those set by Him to that of adultery, breaking the vows in order to be with another.

“…For the spirit of harlotry has caused them to stray,

And they have played the harlot against their God….”

This flows over to turning from a biblical mind-set to a world-based mind-set, one imbedded in ways that are not God’s ways.

“…Their drink is rebellion,

They commit harlotry continually.

Her rulers dearly love dishonor….”

Note that one first had to be in a covenant relationship to break it.  This is a message to believers who have turned away from the practices God has commanded us to follow; to follow practices that are similar to if not the same as those followed by unbelievers.  They have forsaken love of God and others to embrace love of self.

The behaviors indicate a lack of understanding and the responsibility for this lack God lays at the feet of the religious leaders who themselves have turned away in their practices.

“…For the men themselves go apart with harlots,

And offer sacrifices with a ritual harlot.

Therefore people who do not understand will be trampled….”

and

”…My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also will reject you from being priest for Me;
Because you have forgotten the law of your God,…”

There is lack of teaching of the ways of God, His commands to love the Lord your God and your neighbor as yourself, a command echoed later by Jesus and taught by the apostles.

“…Deuteronomy  6:5 and 11:1 NKJV – “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
 “Therefore you shall love the LORD your God, and keep His charge, His statutes, His judgments, and His commandments always.
Luke 10:27 NKJV – So he answered and said, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ “…”

“My people are destroyed…”  To avoid getting caught in this snare, we, individually, as believers, have the ability to keep our relationship with the Lord faithful.  We have access to the word of God, we can study to show ourselves approved.  We can know who He is and what He does. Let the believers in our land be the faithful spouse to a loving God.  Let the believers bring the blessings of God upon our land.

Choose this day whom we will serve, we will serve God.
