Say no to vengeance

Ezekiel 25:15-17

‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because the Philistines dealt vengefully and took vengeance with a spiteful heart, to destroy because of the old hatred,” 16 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites and destroy the remnant of the seacoast. 17 I will execute great vengeance on them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I lay My vengeance upon them.” ’ ”

Why does the Lord say he will punish the Philistines?  For their vengeance against his chosen people and the malice in their hearts, he gives a judgment against them.

“…took vengeance with a spiteful heart,…”

Again we are given a standard of conduct.  Should we harbor wishes of vengeance and in addition to that hold those desires with malice?  These attitudes and actions have no place in a heart filled with love toward one another, in a spirit aligned with the Holy Spirit.  This is history, it is also the will of God.  A God who does not change.  Let us therefore, forgive rather than seek vengeance.

  1. If it be possible, so far as it lies with you, be at peace with all men. Never revenge yourself, beloved, but leave the field clear for God’s wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
