Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed. And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.”
Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
“…what must I do to be saved?…”Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” That’s the only requirement for salvation. We are judged guilty, our selfish lifestyle and our sins judge us. But Jesus took the penalty for us so that all we need do is believe…believe on the Lord Jesus Christ; He was and is who He says He is and He did and does what He says He will do. The messengers found suffering for delivering the message, but did not allow the attack to destroy them. Rather than give in to the pain and offense they prayed and sang to God; the prisoners listened and the message was once again being delivered. God does the work; He grants the salvation, He gave life to His creation, He hears and answers. This time God’s answer brought salvation to the jailer and his family. The message continues to be delivered. A simple message with a powerful effect upon all who hear. Regardless of what it brings our way we will be found faithful to deliver the message and those who hear will find the same joy the jailer experienced. “…he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.” We believe and we share. That is enough.
I believe for every drop of rain that falls
A flower grows,
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night
A candle glows,
I believe for everyone who goes astray,
Someone will come to show the way,
I believe, I believe.
I believe above the storm a smallest prayer
Will still be heard,
I believe that someone in the great somewhere
Hears every word,
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry,
Or touch a leaf, or see the sky,
That someone in the great somewhere is real, the Lord God of creation.
