“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates Me hates My Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
Chosen; chosen out of the world, from the masses, once a member, now no longer. The rest of mankind does not take kindly, no pun intended, to this action. They view it as exclusionary, it is “…you are not of the world,…”; they view it as intolerant, it is “…they have no excuse for their sin…”; they view it as superior, it is “…they do not know Him who sent Me…“; they view it as judgmental, it is “…they have no excuse for their sin…”, they view it as opposition, it is“….they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father…” This they cannot love for it reveals their true nature which is not of God; none of us likes when our weaknesses and failings are shown for all to see. Actually we do not like it when we become aware that all can see and what they can see. This passage clearly states the reason for non-acceptance into the circle of mankind; and the reason for their reactions.
When we share, do we experience less than joyous reception? When we speak out against an evil that is showcased by the Word of God, not our own words, do we experience ridicule, name-calling, hate messaging? When we are faithful to the Lord’s calling and message are we accused of intolerance by the intolerant? This happens and is not a surprise: “They do not know the One…” We know Him and His love, and we express it for each other as He commands. That, as He said, lets them know we are His disciples and what He speaks against, we speak against, what he judges, we are part of, what he does not tolerate, we cannot tolerate. We are in Him and He is in us, one in unity and therefore a target. When they speak against us they are speaking against Him IF what we say are His words and not our own.
