“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
What does being ‘in the vine’ entail? What is the extent of that ‘being’? The life blood flow runs from the vine into its branches, feeds them and they grow and multiply. As the season progresses, they bud, flower and bear fruit. All that is in the vine is also in the branch. Christ gives the image that what is in Him, then, is also in us. It flows from him to us and we grow and bear fruit. Cut the branch off and it ceases to bear fruit; it shrivels and dries out. If the flow from the vine is interrupted and no longer received, the branch dies and is removed. Christ’s words are that life source and flow. We receive them in us and they give us life. We have direct access to him. We are connected. We are also connected to the other branches. What community exists! The unity that is here stems from our inter-connectedness and the fruit we bear. Individual branches, yes, but the same life-source and the same end result. Bear fruit to bring glory to God. It is not of our own doing; it comes from the connection to Christ. We become more and more like Him for we are of Him. Stay connected…
