The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
The lamb…take away sin…baptizing with water so that He should be revealed..He will baptize with the Holy Spirit…this I testify. God promised a way back to a relationship with Him. He promised one who would pay the price for sin’s entrance into this world. He promised this would come through His people. John baptized to revealed this One to Israel, first. Israel turned often from following God but there were always some who continued. These continued to watch. Today many turn from following God’s commands but there are still those who remain and watch. People were hungry for a God who cared, a relationship with their Creator God and went to the wilderness to hear the promise. Today there are those who continue to seek their Creator God and welcome the message He has come, salvation has been given and we can reunite with the one who created us in a personal way. He kept His promise, Jesus came, paid the price and offered that to us. If we receive it, if we believe, we have that relationship. With that relationship comes the same responsibility John had, to share the message of the kingdom of God, here in Spirit, ours to receive. We continue to watch, not for the first appearing but the promised second coming. We too give testimony he has come and will come again. We give witness to the life he gives as we live it, that the kingdom of God is here and we enjoy a renewed relationship with our Creator Father.
