One day some parents brought their little children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But when the disciples saw this, they scolded the parents for bothering him.
Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”
Luke treats this passage briefly. It’s message is simple; receive the Word of God like a child, teach/receive the children, for this is what the kingdom of God is like. This is the way into the kingdom. Anyone who has taught small children knows how easily they accept the Word of God. Their defenses are not yet in place, doubts do not crowd their thinking. They are easy targets for manipulation as a result and Jesus warns elsewhere of taking advantage of their vulnerability. Teach the children the Word of God, don’t keep it from them. Watch how easily they accept its principles. Watch how easily they solve conflict through prayer and words from the Word of God. Learn from them as we teach them; learn how to receive, apply and love God’s Word.
